I am trying to download large files from my iMac to my Google Pixel phone. I am using the USB cable and the HandShaker app. It works perfectly fine for smaller files, but for any file that is over 1gb, the phone disconnects half way through the transfer. The USB connection is set up to transfer over PTP and ive also tried regular file transfer mode, but neither work.

I've never tried the handshaker app.
Instead of this, have you installed the free "Android File Transfer" utility for OS X?

Simply install, and connect your phone in MTP or file transfer mode. Then drag an drop.

I've had this issue myself, and what seemed to be my issue was the phone simple going to sleep after a lack of use, and locking itself. That would also drop the connection. I made my home a location-based unlock area, and I didn't encounter the issue again.
You could temporarily set the security options to "lock after 30 minutes" or something similar, until the transfer has finished. That may help.
