Accidentally did a SMC without backup.

Currently having the same issue.

New MacBook Pro with slow internet loading.

Installed new OS (Mountain Lion). Still slow.

Accidentally did a SMC thinking it would make it faster without backing it up first.

It reset the computer and brought up options to re-install OS. Shows disk needs to be repaired, but the computer can't repair it.

I need the apps on it, I don't have a disk for them. Both recovery disk and Macintosh disk are lock and unable to just re-install.

Apple is saying they can't figure it out and we need to reset = erase it

Is there a way around it!??

Please help

You're facing the shoe cobblers conundrum here just like he can't resole your shoes with you in them ;-} Basically, you'll need to boot up under a second bootable drive to then run Disk Utility from it to fix your internal drive.

Good point @mayer! When I originally posted this I failed to put that in.

@danj I just deleted my answer on the Mac Mini, I wouldn't want anyone to see I could make a mistake ;-)

@mayer - Even I'm not perfect either ;-}

@danj now why the guy just called me on the phone about the MacMini I don't know, maybe he couldn't find your number ;-)

@mayer Ha! I really don't have a way to do that much at home.

My customers wouldn't like me bringing gear in & out of their lab space to work on my personal or other customers gear.

With the up coming changes I may be forced to reconsider starting up my own shop.

I had the same problem. I had to first boot up in Recovery Mode, use it to install OS X on an external drive, then boot up on the external drive, and use Disk Utility to reformat the internal HD to Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). After that, I was able to boot up again in Recovery Mode and reinstall OS X on the internal HD.

Normally I agree this is the best way to gain access to the hidden partition's tools (Disk Utility & if needed the OS installer). In many cases the disk is not workable enough to gain access to the recovery partition. Which is why you might need get a friend with a Mac to help you. Either creating a bootable drive or use a cable connect between the two systems and put your system into Target Disk Mode.

Once you have an external bootable drive to boot the system up from so you can then run Disk Utility to see if you can fix the boot sectors.

In addition, you might be able to gain enough access to the files to copy them off.

If that fails there is nothing more you can do to salvage the drive your self. You'll then need to send the drive to a recovery lab. They are quite expensive so most people can't afford this and in more cases than not buying new application software ends up being cheaper,
