iPhone 6s not turning on or charging even after hard reset

Hi everyone!

So, my girlfriend's iPhone 6s got water damaged from what she told me. She said water spilled on her phone while she was at work but she wiped it off fast and thought nothing serious so she continue using her phone like usual until she got back home from home. On that night her phone started acting weird and to the extend she couldn't use her phone at all and she tried to turn the phone off but it won't let her to do it. She got no choice but let the phone died itself overnight. Next morning she tried charging it but it won't charge. Nothing happens and can't be turn on anymore.

I took her phone and check if there is water damage on her phone by ejecting the sim tray and looking for the white indictor inside the sim tray slot. I saw the white mark and theres no any red mark so I wasn't sure if the water got inside the phone. i tried hard reset the phone and plugged it in to the computer but nothing works. I'm thinking to replace the parts inside of the phone but I'm not sure which parts to replace to make the iPhone alive again.

So, does anybody know how to fix a water damaged iPhone? or know which parts to replace? thank you so much for the time and really appreciate for the help!

There are three water indicator stickers in an iPhone. Just because you didn't see red in the SIM try doesn't mean there was no water. It could have gone in via the earspeaker or Lightning port. The 6S has an adhesive underneath the screen so it is more resistant to water than the 6 but it is not officially water resistant.

You need to do the following asap:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

You should also consider getting a new battery if it has swollen. Resist the temptation to pop it to let the gas out. A compromised Li-ion battery is a fire hazard. If the device appears to power up but behaves erratically, then use a tool like 3uTools to flash the firmware as it may be corrupted.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

thank you so much! but when you said "rinse in alcohol and repeat" what kind of alcohol are you talking about? you mean the isopropyl alcohol?

oh and do I need to put the dock connector in the alcohol as well?

and can you tell me where is the rest of the water indicator stickers at?

thank you for your help!

Yes, IPA. The higher the purity the better. You can also put the Dock Flex in there is you suspect water. As for the sticker, look at the image above and you will see one in between the finger and the thumb. The other one is at the bottom of the phone. It varies by model and I don't have a 6S on hand to confirm but it is probably on the dock flex.

thank you so much!
