I realize not everybody has the same home theater components, but hopefully my story will be of some help.
I recently purchased:
- LG B7 65 OLED TV
- Marantz 1608 Receiver
- Sony X700 4K Blu-Ray Player
- Monster Ultra HD (22.5 GB Speed) Platinum HDMI Cables
(1 for 4K Blu-Ray player to Receiver, 1 for Receiver to TV)
Everything worked fine at the initial setup. My 4K Blu-ray (Planet Earth II) played great. No issues whatsoever.
I updated the firmware on the Sony player and everything continued to work great. In my enthusiasm as a movie buff for optimal picture quality I went in to the Sony 4K player settings and played with the new features and options. I launched Netflix and the blinking issue (also known as "flashing" or "screen blacking out every alternate second or two") started to occur. I initially thought it the issue was due to a Netflix HD (not Ultra HD) and/or wifi internet performance problem (good speed but poor reception where the 4K player is located).
I tested the following, running:
1) A blu-ray through a second (non-4K) blu-ray player via regular HDMI cable.
2) Netflix and YouTube through the same blu-ray player via regular HDMI cable.
3) Netflix and YouTube through an Apple TV 3 (non-4K) via regular HDMI cable.
In each of these instances, everything worked fine.
The next day I turned on the 4K player to demo the Planet Earth II 4K Blu-ray for my wife. The screen blinking issue started up from the get go with the 4K disk. I dreaded the thought of having to figure out where the problem lay between 4 newly purchased components, but then it dawned on me that:
1) When the Sony 4K player was on at the menu level, no blinking was occurring.
2) The issue started after I upgraded the firmware on the Sony 4K player.
3) I had activated some the new Dolby Vision feature,
As soon as I switched "Dolby Vision Output" off, the screen blinking stopped. Everything worked fine again.
I plan to purchase an Apple 4K TV sometime in the next few months (I'm in no hurry as I've just spent a ton of $$$). At that time I'll run further tests with Dolby Vision (on and off) and compare results with the Sony X700 player.
If blinking does not occur with the Apple 4K TV, the issue is most likely with the Sony X700 player's firmware.
If blinking does occur with Dolby Vision activated on the Apple 4K TV, then the issue is likely with Dolby Vision and/or the LG B7.
Sure, I'd like to have Dolby Vision running, but I'll live, and still enjoy watching movies with all this gear.

Hi Chris, open up the TV and inspect the power board, check for any bloated capacitors.
Would be great if you can add some pictures to it.

oldturkey03 . It flickers from black to the picture that it's supposed to display. Its black for most of the time then the screen will flicker. the audio is there as normal.
