What's the biggest HDD that will fit on my Time Capsule?

Hi guys! Big fan of yours as you've saved my butt on a couple of occasions for my Macbook 13". I just did an HDD upgrade for my Macbook and was wondering if I could do the same for Time Capsule... and I can! Prior to entering to this task, I'd like to ask you:

What's the biggest HDD (2GB/4GB) that can fit inside the Time Machine as a replacement?

I'm looking for a 7200rpm or faster drive, which would you recommend.

The guide that's on the site talks about a hybrid because its silent. I don't want silent, I want fast and spacious.

As always, thanks for all your support! Great work on the disassemblies!!!

You can use pretty much any SATA hard drive you want, the guide for installing the drive is here, and you should clone your old one to the new one.

Rab, thanks for the reply, 2.5" or 3.5"? And would you know which make, model, has the best specs/reliability, etc?

Either size will fit, and it really doesn't matter, but I'd suggest either this 7200RPM 1TB drive or 7200RPM 2TB drive.

I tried replacing the 500GB in my A1302 with a Western Digital 2 TB drive (WD20EADS) -- worked fine with the exception of the fact that it never spun down. Ever. This obviously negated the heat benefit of using a "green" drive. Not wanting to take a chance on either a seagate drive or the samsung firmware update, I took a flyer on a new drive -- Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117). Thus far it formatted fine, is quiet, and most importantly, spins down as expected. They have a 3TB version, but I didn't want to push my luck.

The 7K3000 7200 RPM series would likely work as well -- would be somewhat faster, but my main concern was heat and resultant power supply failure, so I went with the less power-hungry drive.

At the same time, I got rid of the rubber mat and replaced it with 4 rubber feet. Not terribly elegant, but it sure runs cooler (and hopefully longer).

Best of luck.

Hi,

I have a A1254 and just ordered a 2 TB WD20EADS.

Then i saw the message of Tom.

Does anybody know if the hd will work with my timecapsule version correctly (means shut down correctly to sleep)?

Or is that a specific problem with this hd in general?

I've now installed the 2 TB WD20EADS in the A1254.

If you set the jumpers correct, the hd powers up and goes to standby correctly.

And it's faster and much more silent than the original 500 GB hd.

So for me the WD20EADS was the perfect choice.

What are the correct jumper settings for this drive then?

Has anyone tried installing a 4Tb HDD? I'm thinking of installing a "Red NAS" version.

***Update: I installed a Seagate 4TB NAS hard drive. Working so far.

Anyone got anything larger than 4 TB in theirs yet? 6TB? 10TB?

With the drives getting larger in my Macs, I need a larger one to store in all of the others.

I guess I could connect an external drive to the TC, but I’d rather not introduce any further bottlenecks.

Thanks!

Now I'm seeing the 18.0TB Toshiba MG09ACA Series drives… and on sale now. Anyone get something large like this inside?

@skippingrock - One of the problems with these ultra big drives is the needed cooling! These drive run quite hot!

Has anyone tried chucking an msata or nvme into this?
