Why is the maximum amount of ram available only 6Gb?

Why is the maximum amount of ram available for my A1260 only 6Gb?

To clarify I have a Macbook Pro 4,1 A1260 2.4Ghz 2x2GB Ram and was thinking of buying a 4GB stick and using one of the current 2GB sticks to make it up to 6GB, but why cant i use two 4GB sticks to make it up to 8GB? is this a hardware limitation?

I have a MBP A1260, and was able to use the 8Gb of ram, however this config reduces battery life and generates a lot more heat. I am now running 6Gb and am geting 4-5 Hrs on 1 charge.

The A1260 will take 8 GBs of RAM. Make sure your Operating System is updated to OSX 10.6.6.

Yes, 8Gb will show up. But only 6Gb will be used.

At least this was the case when I researched this 6 months ago. =)

Well things change in 6 months, please read my link. This article just came out yesterday.

Wow. Great find. Apple needs to roll out a firmware update to let us Macbook users boot into 64Bit Snow Leopard as well. Due to a sneaky firmware limitation, Macbooks, even intel based ones with 64bit EFI can't boot into 64Bit mode in Snow Leopard. But, Macbook Pros can!!

Mactracker has to update their databases to reflect these changes. They have their work cut out for them.

I was pressed for time so I didn't have time to read the your link. :) Still, because it used to be such a common misconception that these could utilize 8Gb of ram I felt I had to comment. But because, as you say, things change fast in this industry I also included that it had been some time since my last research. :)

Your computer will only recognize 6GB, so you'll need a 4gb and 2gb stick in the slots.

I have a late 2007 macbook pro, i was able to upgrade the ram to 8Gb and have the system run smoothly, however the extra ram raised the working temp by over 20' C. I reduced my ram to 6Gb and am now happy with a satiable ( and cooler) system.

Hope this helps you to decide which upgrade to choose.

Has anyone tried 8GB of ram in the A1260 or another 4.1 MBP? The post of Mayer is about the MBP5.1.

Since the price of 8GB of ram has decreased quite a bit I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this.

@Steve, have you tried 8GB of ram with Lion as wel? How does that run.

You'll do better getting an answer by asking a new question and referencing this one

Model: MACBOOK PRO (15-INCH /2.2GHZ)

Date of Purchase: 07-Nov-07. I believe it's the crest line chipset.

Last digits of my serial # X91. All the forums say I'm capped at 6GB. But I saw a post that suggests a firmware update recently allows more.

Your system - MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.2 15" (SR)

Nope - Your series only goes to 6GB. The newer Unibody models firmware allow them to go higher. The issue is the video address space is fixed.
