Is it possible to swap the 11.6" edp display for a 1920x1080 one?

I've been wondering if it's possible to upgrade a MacBook Air 11.6"'s screen to a FHD (1920x1080) one, such as those found on eBay and Alibaba (most indicate they are for Chromebooks).

Will it connect via a 30 pin edp? Will the backlight work? Is it slim enough and will it fit?

Anyone has had any experience doing or perhaps investigating this? Some of these screens go as cheap as 30 bucks, so it's a worthwhile upgrade if possible.

You're asking a lot here! I doubt anyone has ever tried. Are you sure you want to risk it?

Between the possible damage to your system you will likely be spending twice if not more (buying the correct screen and the possible repairs).

Unless you do deeper research on finding out the pinouts and the method of signaling between both your system and the display I wouldn't try it. Even if you got the physical connection to work the GPU logic may not offer any improvement in its scaling.

From EveryMac:

  • 11.6" color widescreen TFT LED-backlit active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1366 by 768 native resolution. Apple reports that it also supports "1366 by 768 (native), 1344 by 756, and 1280 by 720 pixels at 16:9 aspect ratio; 1152 by 720 and 1024 by 640 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768 and 800 by 600 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio."

I think its best to stick to what Apple intended here. Keep in mind taking the display assembly apart is not easy!

Thanks for the answer. The idea came about after I upgraded the i5 logic board to an i7. I thought, "why not see if I can upgrade the screen as well" :)

This a lot different (Apple to Apple) swap out within the same series.

While its not the answer you were hoping for please score & accept it as answered.

I wonder if the new screen from a new Apple MacBook Air (with Retina Display) can be shoehorned onto an old-style (2014) MacBook Air? That would get past the dreadful loss of the magsafe power socket and the downgrade to the horrible 'butterfly keyboard' and loss of other ports -- all things that must be done if replacing an old MacBook Air with a new one.

Sorry that won't work! The older MacBook Air uses LVDS signaling whereas the new 2018 MacBook Air uses iDP (eDP) signaling very different.
