Which kind of MXM slot does it have?

Hello ,

I want to buy the iMac 27" 5k 2017 release and I need to know which MXM slot does it use and if I can use the Mobile GTX 1080 in my notebook in it or not.

I will be switching the cards , becuase an 1080 GTX inside my iMac is more important than inside the notebook.

I will put Apple RX580 inside my notebook if they use the same MXM slot. I assume they should be because it is the same time and same MXM slot generation.

Can you help ?

Here is what I want to do:

  1. Open my notebook and remove the GTX 1080 card in it.
  2. Open the iMac I am going to buy and remove the RX580 Pro in it.
  3. Install the 1080 GTX in the iMac.
  4. Install the RX580 Pro in the notebook.

I assume they both use the same power (150-180 watts) and produce the same heat. so the cooling will work on both.

Sorry Guy the New 'Thin Series' iMacs don't use a MXM connection to host the Graphics card. The dedicated GPU is now soldered to the main logic board

Update (09/17/2017)

Clearly your mind is set with a vision that can't be corrected to the truth. I know you want to believe it has a MXM slot like the older models sadly its just not there.

The logic board in the Late 2014 & 2015 27" iMac Retina 5k. IFIXIT teardown is EXACTLY the same layout as the newer 2017 27" iMac Retina 5k model sans a different CPU. Here's a clear view of the logic board:

Block Image

As you can see the GPU chip is soldered to the logic board (Red outlined chip) there is no MXM slot system and the chip is not removable. For reference heres a MXM card:

Block Image

There is no MXM connector in this logic board. If you watch the video of the newer 2017 27" iMac Retina 5k model you would see its the same!

As for the CPU I don't understand why you are bring this into the dialog. As it turns out the CPU is replaceable in all of the 27" models. But what does this have to do with the GPU you where asking about?

Also, why you would bring in the 21.5" model into the dialog here is also perplexing given your question was on the GPU.

Just to explain things here Apple has danced around with the 21.5" series. Some CPU's where soldered in the newer 'Thin Series' models. The GPU is soldered in all of the 'Thin Series'.

Are you sure ? I am talking about the 2017 series which they added 180 watts RX 580 pro GPU to it . not the older models which used mobile GPU cards.

have you seen the 2017 model or you are just talking about the slim models of older generations ?

The 2017 imacs are the only ones with Desktop grade GPU and not Mobile grade.

See for you self here: Unboxing and Teardown of the 2017 27" iMac Retina 5k.

Here's the IFIXIT teardown of the previous model which uses the same logic board: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5k Display Teardown.

Apple is using a GPU chip not a MXM Card.

Are you thinking about the still to be released iMac Pro?? From the limited images of the insides of it, it appears to have a soldered GPU as well.

The movie you linked proves nothing. he did not remove the heatsink on the CPU and the GPU to see if they can be upgraded or not. actually I already know that the CPU is up gradable and not soldered yet the movie maker guy said cant be upgraded which is false , the CPU is NOT SOLDERED on the iMAC 2017.

here is the 21 inch 2017 in ifix it and as you can see the CPU IS UP GRADABLE.

iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display 2017 Teardown

sadly it does not have GPU on it to see.

and big no the previous model is NOT the same board . AT ALL. sorry .

I am still waiting for some one to fully tear down the 2017 iMAC 27 inch model.

Mac does not support any NVIDIA GPUs past 900 series due to the spat they had with each other you can as of right now only go up to a Radeon 7 GPU for Mac OS. If your Mac has a thunderbolt port you can get a External GPU dock and a Radeon7 fairly cheap.

@vespermoirai - The last iMac which offered NVIDEA was the late 2013 27" iMac which offered: NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M, GeForce GTX 775M, or GeForce GTX 780M GPU's

VIA eGPU I think you can get up to a 900 Series. I will look and see what I can find.

GPUs that are supported on MacOS on Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur. I don't know if it works on newest.

@vespermoirai - True! eGPU's are possible! But, I think macOS Mojave is the last version with support for NVIDEA as Apple's low level architecture was changed in Catania.

I didn't find they really offered much help in image or video work given the costs.

Don't forget the OP wanted to install a MXM board into a 2017 27" system which is just not possible at the start and it drifted about to CPU's and not understanding the GPU was soldered onto the main logic board.
