Error 56 usually occurs when attempting to update with faulty/glitchy hardware. You'll need to use DFU mode to restore the phone.

Brand new? I would go back to apple to get it replaced.
Try taking out the sim card and restoring it in DFU mode if possible. Use 3UTools to restore your iPhone instead of iTunes.
