Not starting beyond the logo and bar
My MacBook is not going beyond the logo and progress bar on startup. Am I looking at replacing the battery or the SSD?

I would restart the system holding the D key to get to the onboard diagnostics to see if something comes up. If that works, I would then do the Command R to get into the recovery petition to repair the drive.

@ggarofalo1 - Almost ;-}
The link you have here is for an older SATA HD based system whereas this is a PCIe SSD based system.

The progress bar and the logo stayed on without doing anything else. It stayed that way for over an hour today.
I put three calls into Apple Care. Did the Command S, the Shift Control Option, the Command R and, finally the Command Option R. The last one worked. It required me to download and install macOS High Sierra to replace El Capitan. Took a while and now it works.
One of the things the Applecare folks and I discussed was the possibility of having to replace the "CMOS battery?" Didn't know I had one.
My next step is to try and restart it. Wish me luck
