iTunes backup made a password itself - how to decrypt?

Hi Guys,

I will describe whole situation with that iPhone 6S.

This iPhone is my girlfriends telephone. She used it without any problems until iOS11 update. After that we noticed a massive battery drain and decrease of performance. Normally it takes a whole day to used up all energy from 100% until 1%. After update it takes about 3-4 hours to get to 1% and after that iPhone was working on 1% for next 1-2 hours.

Today after whole night of charging the battery was at 7% of charge.

I have decied to restore her iPhone on my iMac.

I have 2013 iMac. I have restored very many iPhones on that iMac without any problem until today.

I have connected my girlfriends iPhone to iMac, made a backup (encryption was turned off) and after backup finished I have started to restore.

I've reach "hello" message and started to activate the iPhone (typed password to Apple ID etc.) until iTunes asked me for backup password.

We tried ALL password used in past without any result.

I have tried to decrypt the password with 3rd part Apps, but those decrypt just 3-characters in Trial mode.

We have iCloud backup from yesterday noon, but without any photos. That is why I need access to that backup.

Guys I'm in the dead end. Does anybody got similar situation?

Help me please.

If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

or try TunesGeeker tool to recover your backup password:

A full software restore ? it's too complicated to work for the most people, There's a lot of advice on Google, like this one :

If you want to access iTunes backup, it is bound to enter the right password here. i guess that your girlfriend have set the iTunes backup password when she enabled the iTunes backup function. If you forgot it, there is no way to get it back unless you try the third party software. Among all the iTunes backup software on the market, iSunshare iTunes Password Genius for Mac has a good review and recommendation on many website, you can check it here:

So this happened to someone else too! Did you ever come to a resolution on this? I had the same problem - I turned encryption off, and it encrypted it with some mystery password anyway. Since we didn't create a password, we didn't know what it was and we've lost alot of data. Very disappointed and Apple didn't help. Tried hashcat to brute force attempt to decrypt if I recall correctly, but no luck.

Hi,

I know it can be a pain to resolve this. You really only have 1 of 3 choices.

OPTION1 (probably not going to work but it may)

You can’t restore an encrypted backup without its password. With iOS 11 or later, you can make a new encrypted backup of your device by resetting the password. Here’s what to do:

  1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset All Settings and enter your iOS passcode.
  3. Follow the steps to reset your settings. This won't affect your user data or passwords, but it will reset settings like display brightness, Home screen layout, and wallpaper. It also removes your encrypted backup password.
  4. Connect your device to iTunes again and create a new encrypted backup.

You won't be able to use previous encrypted backups, but you can back up your current data using iTunes and setting a new backup password.

'If you have a device with iOS 10 or earlier, you can't reset the password. In this case, try the following:'

  • If someone else set up your device, ask them for the password.
  • Use an iCloud backup instead of iTunes. If you don't have an iCloud backup, you can make one.
  • Try using an older iTunes backup.

OPTION 2

- Call apple- Probably not going to get you anywhere.

OPTION3

- Start the device out as a new phone (YOU LOST YOUR DATA)

I hope option 1 works cause the other 2 are well not good.

Hey I had same problem with encryption and could not restore from itunes back up. Thought i had lost all mt photos and everything. I did not put a password on my back ups either. A simple fix to this is do your back up from icloud, it will not ask for a password and will backup straight away.

If it’s iTunes made a password itself, we can force-brute method to recover iTunes backup password, but it will cost a few minutes to find iTunes password. And for those who remember some details about the iTunes backup password, it’s quicker, but iTunes Password Unlocker is the only chance to recover iTunes backup password.
