Samsung SSD in Optical Bay w/new SATA Cable not working

My friend's MacBook Pro 15'' 2011 recently died due to a screen and keyboard failure, and I was lucky enough to inherit the Samsung SSD 840 PRO, which was functioning perfectly, which he had put in this MacBook as a replacement for the optical bay.

Using the exact same Hard Drive Enclosure, SATA Cable and SSD, I replaced my own disk drive with the same setup.

Yet I'm unable to format the SSD disk and get this error message: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.

Here is what I've tried:

  • Putting the SSD back on my friend's laptop, formatting it and putting it back. Was able to format on his mac, but could not install MacOS when putting back in mine.
  • Rebooting in recovery mode and use the terminal to erase or install. Same message.
  • Putting the SSD in the hard drive place instead of optical bay, which allowed me to format and install OS on the SSD disk. When I put it back into the optical bay I could now access the drive, but could not use it as a startup disk as it would "disappear" from the startup disk screen. This is where I thought the cable might be unstable.
  • Buying a new SATA SuperDrive Cable and replacing it. Same failure.
  • Creating a bootable USB and load from there. Same failure.

I'm completely puzzled by this. I cannot understand, that moving an SSD from an identical MacBook Pro can cause so much trouble.

Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong?

You may have an issue with your Mac using the optical bay carrier to host your second drive. Review this doc: OWC - Data Doubler. It makes no differences who's carrier you get as the issue is some systems clocking has an problem.

Thank you for your reply! Maybe I simply do not understand the inner-workings of a MacBook, but why would it be a broken hard drive cable, when my HDD is working perfectly placed in the hard drive bay? I've not touched the cable that you are referring to so I'm simply just confused, why this might be the case then :-)

Are you not using the Disk Utility app from your current internal hard drive to try to format?

I have also tried using Disk Utility from my current hard drive. Same result no matter where I try to format the SSD.

I think Mayer is a little bit confused about this problem. I have a similar issue, I can't work with a ssd in my optical drive either, but the hdd worked in optical bay. I tried so many things with the ssd, but it would not..

The root issue is the system's SATA port is not able to support SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) devices! This is a known issue in many of the MacBook Pro's have a bad clock signal on the Optical drives SATA port. Review this: OWC Data Doubler find your system to see what it can support. If it can only support a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive then you need to get an older fixed I/O speed SSD drive. Many have auto sense technology so they can work across the different SATA I/O's (SATA I, II & III). But, they can't be locked down manually which is what is needed here.

Now the bad news! Moving your HDD over while it is able to work you are putting the data it has on it at risk! First, the Optical drive port does not offer crash guard protection like the HD bay does so if you move the system or bang it while the drive is seeking you can crash the head assembly killing the drive and its data.

The second risk is the drive needs to be a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive to reliably work. As the SATA port clocking is off so it can mis-write causing corruptions.

So the your dammed either way! The best solution is to jump to a single drive solution like a SSHD or a larger SSD and calling it a day
