iMac 2010 Logic board repair and possible upgrade

Hello,

I have problems with my iMac i7 early 2010 video card. Unfortunately it is not repairable. I have to buy new logicboard. Can I upgrade with logicboard from 2011 models?

Thanks!

UPDATE (11/05/2017)

I have problems with my iMac i7 early 2010 video card. After everything was checked, I think that the problem is overheated 6 pin chip marked 638Y.

I couldn't find any information about it. Because of that I considered replacing the mainboard. Any information about that chip will be appreciated.

Ivan, Its best to not create a second duplicate question. I've copied your other one here.

How about giving us a bit more background on your system. Did it smoke or smell like something burnt? What does it do now and what happened when it went?

Hello Dan,

The background of the problem is as follows:

The diplay stopped to lighten up. I Think that the videocard is OK, because when power on the computer there is a opening sound. This chip, I've talked about is may be a key responsible for lighten up the matrix. It's situated next to the monitor socket and i think that it does not provide relevant voltage to triger the display lightening. Unfortunately I couldn't find specs od this chip.

To start with you likely don't need a full logic board only a replacement GPU board. Here is a guide to replace it: iMac EMC 2390 Graphics Card replacement

Here are your possible choices:

  • ATI Radeon HD 5670 w/512MB - Apple P/N 661-5578
  • ATI Radeon HD 5750 w/1GB - Apple P/N 661-5579

As for doing a full swap out of the logic board with a 2011 model sorry that wouldn't work. Apple changed the design enough the board and the connections wouldn't fit.

You'll need to locate a set of schematics for your system to trace out the logic to be sure the chip is good or bad as well as identify it.

Look on the main logic board for a 820-xxxx number this is the board number this is the best way to ID the board. If you give us the number we might be able to ID the part as well.

Ivan, The chip you've pointed out is Q9000 FDC638P_G

Here's the part: Fairchild FDC638P P-Channel 2.5V MOSFET
