My internet is painfully slow

Internet on this computer has been really slow for over a year. Most devices in my home are around 75 mbps download speed. Just did the speed test and got .6 for download and 7.37 upload. I’m not completely computer illiterate but I have no idea what has been going on. I’m running High Sierra, there are no updates available. I have 156 GB available. I have the computer in the same room as my modem. Please help

Have you connected it directly to the modem using a physical cable to see if the speeds are equally slow?

I don’t have Ethernet adapter, but if that will help diagnose the problem I will go out and buy one

It sounds like outdated hardware. I'd recommend a direct connection if not you can get a USB to ethernet adapter which are cheaper, but results will not be as great as a direct connection.

2014 is outdated?

I get just as fast direct line vs Wireless on a 2011.

Unfortunately a MacBook Air, doesn't have an ethernet port, so she would have to get a USB -> Ethernet adapter to try that.

So I found a You Tube video that deals with this issue. I watched it and it seems like a legit video. But don't have a MacBook on me right now to test it. If you are still having issues I can get a MacBook tomorrow and try it .

What he suggests in the video seems plausible since the config files that are modified do control many aspects of the wifi network card performance.

Good Luck

I've found that extension networks are waaaaay slower. if you have any network extenders, make sure to connect directly to the router's wifi and not the extension if possible. Also, make sure your on the right network in the first place!

You have a few different issues here.

The first is the 802.11 spec your MacBook Air supports (802.11ac) as well as how many streams it supports. In this case it is a single antenna (one stream per frequency 2.4 & 5.0 GHz). The MacBook Pro 15" has two WiFi antenna's

So the data rate will be limited here depending on your Routers access point (AP) supports. Some Routers don't support MIMO.

I would recommend you get a good WiFi analyzer to see what your AP is offering and run the app on each Mac to see what each is able to run at. This is what I use: WiFi Explorer

Sometimes it's useful. I mean there are a lot of moments in life when you need insurance. I mean for example when I was a kid my father took out a life insurance policy on himself and I never really understood why. But when he died and we collected the insurance money I understood his reasoning, since I knew that me and my mom and my little brother won't have to worry about the money for a while. I found it really cool and useful for me as a person so I also took out a life insurance policy on myself. I found this really cool service online that helped me choose the best deal. (You can check it here: usave.co.uk) I am really happy with my decision since I know that my kids will be safe if something happens

@patrickc007 - What are you experiencing? This is quite an old question which didn't get very far so we just don't know!
