UE Megaboom will not charge (light still flashing)

I haven't used the Megaboom for 6 months, took it out of storage and used it for the last couple of days while I was working outside (still had battery that lasted two days). Once it went flat, I plugged it in to charge overnight, the white light was flashing as normal. In the morning, I tried to turn it on and it said "Critical battery, please charge". While charging, if I try to turn it on, it just says "Charging, please wait". It still won't work no matter how long I leave it charging, though the white light is still flashing as normal. Is the battery toast? I did use it outside on a day with a lot of fog

for me it was the plus buttom... thanks for the solution

I can’t get the white light to turn on at all and all it tells me is “critical battery, please charge. I put it in the fridge last night, I have pushed the minus and plus either one at a time with the power button as well as both at the same time. Still.....”critical battery, please charge”!!! Ughhh! It’s not even a year old. HELP PLEASE! Thank you!

Issue I'm having is I plug it in to charge an my light comes on an starts blinking likes it charging an it gives me a message about having critical low battery then after a few seconds the light goes out an it never charges. Anyone have this

Mine too!!! I cant get it to actually charge :(

That's what I'm dealing with now, out of the blue. It sat out in the sun for a bit this morning and I'm terrified I overheated and fried the battery

Same problem. Red light keeps flashing and wont seem to charge.

Hold down the VOL DOWN button and the POWER button for a few seconds until you hear a sound. Then turn it back on.

All fixed! Worked a treat for me :)

If not for this fix; I was about to embark on my own electrical mindset, that is very limited in patience! THANK YOU so much for this quick and easy FIX!

Gby

Worked! Thanks!!

so im trying everything......just now put it in the fridge.......not sure what that will do, however when i have tried to charge by pressing VOL up n down, sometimes it states that its critical, charge, and repeats, at another time i press same buttons and quickly it states charging, however goes quickly back to critical message.......

Worked! Thanks. Too bad this tip is not easily accessible in the assistance and FAQ.

mine is still not working, the white charging small led is not flashing at all but until now it worked perfectly. I restarted it and did all the process and it’s the same, and I am using the original adaptor and cable to charge it. :(

My speaker did this. I was able to fix it by resetting the speaker.

Plug it in, and let it charge for a while, just to make sure it has really does have a charge (like half an hour, minimum).

Then hold down the minus button, and the power button for about twelve seconds, until you get a beep.

That's all it took for the speaker to start up correctly.

After that, I did have to forget the blue tooth device, and reconnect new. I don't know if that is part of the process.

I running into the same issue - even replaced the battery and still will not take a charge. I'm beginning to think Logitech sets a time bomb in all their devices so they die after a period of time so you have to buy a new one. Same thing happened to several Harmony remotes that crapped out after updates - I swore off Logitech peripherals after that. Received this Megaboom as a gift, it sounded great when it worked - will not be buying another.

Having same problem with megaboom. Red light keeps on flashing even after I press minus volume and power button. I get a sound but not a beep

I had a similar problem. Through the app I did a firmware update and it worked after that.

Took a few tries, now working perfectly. Thanks!

The firmware update fixed everything! After holding down the minus and power buttons, I accidentally pressed the vol up button and that turned it back on. Then the firmware update allowed it to charge. Win

Change the charger, happened to me, couldn't figure it out, and you can't just use any charger just because it fits the port, the charger maybe to weak and it will not charge know matter how long you leave it on charge, not only that, it will bugger up your weaker charger that you have used for your phone.... Needs higher output.... Try it

What other charger. My speaker has been plugged up for 2 or 3 days. It only says, critical battery, please charge. It won't do anything.

Same here exactly!!! So frustrating!

I’ve done all the suggestions and the dang thing is still not charging! It won’t even say critical battery any more. It was purchased about 3 months ago and has been gently used. I am so frustrated after spending $300.00 for exactly nothing! Yuk!!

This is happening to mine as well. It is only a few months old and not used much.

@wdwilshep try holding down the turn on button and the Plus volume button for several seconds. if that doesn't work, try with minus instead. This worked for me. so glad not to have to take it back.

Hi!

You should try using a different power adapter, one that outputs 2A to jump-start the battery before trying to replace it.

2 hours in fridge and plugged in my best charger, boom! It worked. Charged it 30 minutes so I could reset it, all is working now! How did putting it in fridge for 2 hours fix the charging issue?? I have no idea, but it worked!

The fridge has nothing to do with it, I don’t know where that youtuber got his info but you literally just have to hold the 2 buttons to reset it whilst plugged in, if anything the fridge may just cool the components if they’ve ended up running too hot or something. But that’s it, if even that..

Do u have to turn it on first?

This has happened to me with cell phones as well. If it depletes too much it won’t charge. If you plug the charger in and out quickly, sometimes it will begin to charge. I don’t know why this works, but it fixed my UE Boom and my phone multiple times. For my UE Boom I also tried turning it on while doing this. It’s working fine now.

Hi

I have the same problem and have tried the - and Power button combi. It seems to have worked.

I would just like to say though that reading all the threads surely it would indicate that there is a fundamental problem with this speaker??!! They aren’t cheap and surely a customer shouldn’t have to be opening the unit up and doing some soldering fhs!!??

If I end up ditching this speaker I certainly won’t be buying another one having read about these problems.

Ultimate Ears should be sent this thread and come up with some answers.

The Ultimate Ear FAQ also mentions connecting to a PC. On my Boom 2, even after downloading the software upgrade, I still didnt get the flashing white "charge" light. Connecting as follows solved that issue.

A: If your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM turns off with a “Critical Battery” message even though it’s fully charged, it's usually due to a temporary problem where the charge can’t be detected. Here's how to resolve it:

Plug your speaker into a USB port on your computer using the supplied USB cable.

Turn your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM on. NOTE: Your operating system may install USB software automatically.

Disconnect your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM from your computer.

Turn your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM off and then back on.

Your ULTIMATE EARS BOOM battery error should now be corrected.

See this document https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/...

(because otherwise you won’t believe me).

  1. Plug and unplug power cable 25-30 times, until the power light flashes.
  2. Leave to charge for a few hours
  3. Meanwhile, put Ultimate Ears app on your phone.
  4. Unplug from power, switch on with button on top of Boom unit. Quickly connect with Bluetooth to your phone.
  5. Open UE app, which will prompt an urgent firmware upgrade. Download and install the upgrade (does this automatically).
  6. Never let it get to 0% battery charge again.

My speaker is less than a year old. It would not take a charge. The charging light did not flash at all. When I turned it on it said “Critical Battery” and then turned off. The above solutions did not work exactly as they were described. So here’s what I did:

1) Hold the power button until the speaker entered pairing mode.

2) Hold the power button and the volume down button (at the same time) until you hear a sound (Takes maybe 10 seconds.)

3) I did this with my speaker plugged into a USB port on my laptop. It is now charging again.

Hope this helps!

I agree with others that as big a problem as this seems to be, Ultimate Ears should fix this, and also share with other how to fix the problem.

It is possible that you drained the battery low enough that it will no longer charge. I have seen this happen before

For anyone else looking for an answer, Lance could be right. Unfortunately his answer came a little bit too late for me. I bought a new UE Megaboom and threw the old one in the trash. After the first couple of weeks, the same thing happened and it would no longer charge. I tried various things to get it to work, until I realised I was actually charging the speaker with the charger I use for my mobile phone etc. I switched back to the original UE fluorescent yellow/green charger and left it overnight. In the morning the speaker was working again.

So I tried all of the above - fridge, every button combination, a 2.5amp charger, changed cords - all the same - nothing. Then, almost by accident, I plugged the power cord into a USB on my PC instead of the power plug and noticed that the fast flashing white light changed to slow flashing. Didn’t work on the other computer but did on this one and left overnight - boom, life is good again.

Go figure!

+1 for cooling the unit in the fridge.

Prior to that, even using the charger and USB cable that came with my UE Megaboom, the white light would blink just twice and then no more. The battery would not charge and the unit would not power up even briefly.

After a couple of hours in the fridge - it took only a couple of attempts but eventually the battery fully charged. I played music for a while, connected the charger again and the white light blinked happily.

I figure that running the battery down too far was the cause of the original problem.

I’ve also been challenged by this for the last few days. Got to the point where my GF wouldn’t let me plug in the Megaboom speaker anymore because of persistent, fast flashing light. I tried all the button combinations possible. Then I tried both fridge and freezer. Speaker would claim up to 40% charge but then die quickly unless plugged in . Didn’t feel like it was getting a ‘real’ charge. Also the charge light would flash/blink really rapidly all the time. Never the slow, pulsing charge light that my smaller UE Boom speaker shows.

Finally, using instructions from YouTube video below I disassembled the speaker this morning. I made sure to press the battery pins very firmly into the top part/charge connector. Then I plugged the speaker into the front USB ports of my desktop computer (Dell Optiplex 3020) . At last, a slow charging light. Will leave it charging for the rest of the day and then post my results later.

What were the results!?

So this actually work for me, I was a little skeptical about it but I had no other choice. I actually stuff my UE Speaker into the freezer for 2hrs the original plan ended up falling asleep so it was in there for about 4-5 hrs, but I guessed it help out let it unfreeze cause buttons were frozen hahaha but after like 20 mins I plug it in with my iPad charging box and its regular charger and Wa-Lah charged full power has been working ever since. Believe it or not but it work. Hope it works for all of y'all who's having the same problem

so I started having issue again. then I discovered by removing the top and connecting charging cable directly to the circuit board connector it would charge and work just fine. If I tightly reattach the top, connection drop and speaker stops working. So I charged by removing top . Then I very lightly reattached the top (portion with AUX and Charger inputs). Working wonderfully again but likely no longer water resistant

Hello! Im in the same situation. I have a UE Roll (not Megaboom). Its is around 3 years old. It worked perfectly fine until a couple of weeks ago when it started repeating "critical battery please charge". I already tried different chargers, pressed + and power (also - and power) but nothing seems to work. What other option do I have? (I didnt understand the fridge one)

Thanks!

So, I finally fixed mine. I had the same issue, my UE Megaboom was unused for a couple of months and it wouldn’t charge or come on. I tried everything from putting it in the fridge to trying to open it and holding down the volume and power buttons for about 12 seconds. This would only reset it sometimes but it still wouldn’t charge.

The steps on their website didn’t work the first two times I tried it. But it did after I unplugged it and re plugged it for about 40 times or so. I then held the volume down button and the power button for about 12 seconds and did it multiple times and it came on but went off again. I just left it to charge with the original charger for a few hours after these steps and it made high pitched radio static noises. After about 2 hours or so, I was able to get it switched on and charging. I suggest you try to get it to this point, pair it with the app and turn on remote power if you can. While charging I wasn’t able to turn it on using the button on the speaker but the remote power worked and now its working fine. Here are the steps they ask to do on their website but make sure to leave it in for at least 10 seconds each time as the first few times I tried these steps I was removing it much quicker and it wouldn’t work. Hope this helps!

  1. Connect your speaker to the charger and leave it connected for a few seconds.
  2. If the charge LED fails to pulse continuously, disconnect the cable from your speaker, then reconnect it, and leave it connected for a few seconds.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until your speaker gets to a normal charge cycle - the LED should continue to pulse. (This could take up to 25-30 times.)
  4. Once your speaker gets to a point where it charges normally, continue to charge it until the battery is at 100%.

UE Megaboom 2 would not charge, had flashing white light, which would only flash for around 5 seconds.

Managed to get mine back working by unplugging and plugging the cable back in.

Think my battery was very dead, so gave it short charge each time till it cut out, re plugged it back in each time.

Noticed that each time i re plugged it in the white led would flash a little bit longer.

After 10 attempts it is now charging correctly

I tried holding the power and volume down buttons and I tried holding the power and volume up buttons neither worked for me. However, after leaving my Boom 2 plugged in for a while I connected it to my computer and used the Windows firmware utility to update the Boom’s firmware. Once the firmware was updated it charged and functioned no problem. The Mac/Windows firmware utility is available for download from Ultimate Ears’ support website here: https://support.ultimateears.com/en/boom... it’s at the bottom in the answer to the FAQ “How do I update the software on my ULTIMATE EARS BOOM 2?”

I have the UE Boom 2 and it wouldn’t charge. All I got was red blinks for a few seconds and the “Battery critical, please charge” message. I tried various configurations of hitting the power button and plus and minus. I decided to try to update the software, but it wouldn’t recognize as being connected. I pushed the micro USB really hard into the speaker and held it there because the white charging light started blinking and my computer registered. I kept the pressure on it while it updated. Now it’s charging without me having to apply pressure while on the wall charging brick.

So maybe try pushing really hard on the micro usb until it gets to a certain charge. Could have been a fluke, but I’m glad it’s working now.
