Raw Image Support

Anyone know how I can reinstall raw image support for snow leopard (problem existed in leopard also)?

For some reason on my laptop when I open files from my canon xsi I get strange colors randomly on some pictures (it changes every time). Yet I can take the same exact pictures to my imac and they look fine (I can open them up on my xp machine and the look ok also)

Below is an example of the raw file and jpg.

Thanks in advance

I don't think it is a raw support issue.

If I download that CR2 raw file I get the same scrambled image, load it into Lightroom, and for a moment it previews the file correctly (and looking in finder the jpeg preview is fine), but the RAW file itself is corrupted.

When you are opening them on the XP or iMac are you actually opening them, or just viewing the JPEG preview? I think you are just seeing the JPEG preview embeded in the raw file, but not actually viewing the file corrupted file itself.

I think you could have a bad card and it's corrupting your RAW files. Try formatting the card and see if it is any better. Or if it is a no name card, I'd invest in a Lexar or Sandisk card. I've always stuck to Sandisk cards over the last few years, various cards, never had any corrupted images.

hmm its very odd because on my imac I open it in Aperture and it shows fine (even exporting to a jpbg its fine). Xp I open directly using canon's driver. I'm just like you sandisk. Just a really odd problem since I only see it on the laptop.

It looks like the Canon DPP software was updated 10/18/2009:

You might also see if the images open properly using the built in OS X Image Capture app.

I know the Canon 5D Mk II RAW files will open successfully under Snow Leopard (fresh install) - perhaps some corruption came across when you did the upgrade install of SL? If you reinstall Snow Leopard over itself, it automatically does an archive install, which may also resolve your issue.

Good Luck!

The problem existed before the upgrade also. I most likely will go down the reinstall path just seeing if we can track the issue before. I don't have any of the cannon drivers installed on my macs. Thanks

Well I've downloaded the image a second time, yesterday was on a 10.5 iMac, today a 10.6 MacBook. I get the same as you both times. So I don't think it is RAW support on your laptop.

What is your workflow, have you got these images OK on the iMac they are fine, transfer to the laptop and corrupted? Do they then re-open if you transfer back to the iMac or are they then perm corrupted. I'm suspecting it'd be broken or I'd be getting a working image here. Imagine if you sent me the same file from the iMac originally it would work here also.

Have you got filevault enabled on the laptop? I've seen a snippet of info on one of the Apple discussion boards

"I have been advised that FileVault could be the culprit. I have Filevault activated on my MacBook Pro and after upgrading to Leopard, my RAW CR2 Canon images created post upgrade are all unreadable. I believe the Filevault encryption may be to blame. I am investigating but it may give others something to go on."

Workflow isn't much. I take the card and put it into a card reader attached through usb. Copy the files over to my NAS. Eject the card and then open the files up in aperture. I don't have FileVault enabled on the laptop. Here is that exact same file uploaded from my imac.(same file because its on my shared nas)

Right, that image loads fine here which the laptop version didn't. Fairly sure something is corrupting your image files on the laptop, unfortunately beyond the Firevault lead unsure to what it would be, but each time you try something you need to bring fresh images over to the laptop to test as those already on the laptop broken won't be fixed by anything you do.
