Why do I hear a loud "CLANG-CLANG-CLANG" during the wash cycle

During the WASH cycle, there is a LOUD banging noise. I've had this washer since 2009 and it started about 2 years after that.

Can this be repaired?

This ONLY happens during the wash cycle. Not during spin, or anything else. Like I mentioned. Thanks for the time anyway.

Cause 1

Tub Bearing

The tub bearing is mounted in the middle of the outer tub. The tub bearing helps to keep the inner tub spinning smoothly. Replacing the tub bearing is a very involved repair and will require disassembling most of the washer. If the tub bearing is defective, we recommend replacing both the outer tub and bearing as an assembly if the manufacturer offers the components together.

Cause 2

Tub Seal and Bearing Kit

The tub bearing is mounted in the middle of the outer tub. The tub bearing helps to keep the inner tub spinning smoothly. If the washer is noisy during the spin cycle or is leaking from the bottom of the tub near the transmission, the tub seal and bearing are likely defective. Replacing the tub bearing is a very involved repair and will require disassembling most of the washer. If the tub bearing is defective, we recommend replacing the outer tub and bearing at the same time.

Cause 3

Rear Drum with Bearing

The rear drum has a bearing or bearings in it to keep the inner tub spinning smoothly. If the tub bearing system is defective the washer can become very noisy. On some machines bearings are sold separately from the rear drum, however we recommend replacing both the outer drum and bearing as an assembly if the manufacturer offers the components together because removing and pressing in the new bearing can be exceptionally difficult. Be aware that replacing the outer tub and bearing is also not easy and can be very costly.

I appreciate your time to answer, but this only happens during the WASH cycle, not during spin. And it has a distinct CLANG or BANG sound, not just "noisy." Does this narrow it down?

Please tell me what happens when you try to turn the agitator by hand.

Thank you.

There's no agitator. The design is like a front-load but flipped on top to create a top load version.

When I spin the basket forward or backward, no noise. Only during the wash cycle.

MAYTAG Bravos Quiet Series 300

Sticker Display is this:

MOD: MVWB400VQ0

TYPE: 580

Frankly, I don't have a clue for a machine with no agitator. Maybe @ladytech has run into one of these.

There is something out of wack. Unplug the unit. Lay it on its front. Take the plastic Sheild off 2 - 5/16 screws. Are there signs of belt damage , water leak or oil leak? The shifter is above the belt and has 2 wires to it. It has a little plastic tab that fits inside another piece. This is located right below the center of the tub. If that plastic tab is up inside a plastic piece then you’re good about looks worn replace it. Shine your flashlight in the bottom of the tub you should be able to see if there is anything like a sock or piece of clothing even change like pennies nickels and dimes if you see a lot of change in the bottom of that tab that is probably what you’re hearing when washing.
