some keys on keyboard occasionally not registering

occasionally, some of the keys on my keyboard don't register a keypress. most notably s and r, but sometimes others as well... it does seem though like it's always keys that are on the left hand when typing. i don't recall ever seeing it happen on right handed keys...

what should i be looking at first to try to resolve this? i took the bottom case off and cleaned everything out with compressed air, hasn't resolved the issue...

Did you find an answer/ as you can see i have some keys not working.

Sounds like liquid has shorted out some of the keys.

@mayer definitely not the case, i have never spilled any liquid on this machine.

i ended up replacing the entire top case rather than messing around with all the screws to take the keyboard out and replace only that...we'll see if that fixes the problem. so far the results look promising...

You might want to check your battery to make sure its not pressing up as that can happen. Most of the time I find the center keys get effected first. You'll need to remove it to check it out.

The other possibility is some keys get a beating as they tend to be used more. S's & R's are two of the most used letters.

Using the show keyboard menu option by enabling it with Keyboard Preferences will allow you to buy some time as well as a way to test your keyboards keys.

If you think it's not the battery, then it's likely time for a new keyboard. You can replace the full uppercase assembly or you can replace the keyboard alone. Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Upper Case Replacement Here's the uppercase: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Early 2011-Mid 2012) Upper Case. Replacing the keyboard alone is a bit more work and you do need to be careful in taking the old one out. Frankly, I think just getting the uppercase is just easier.

my battery is needing to be replaced, i've just been putting it off...istat menus says service battery and health is at 61%.

what exactly about the battery would be causing it though? what am i looking for?

any areas where the battery is puffing up.

i'm assuming it will be obvious? i've never actually looked at the battery and don't have any experience with one that has expanded...

@crackers8199 - I've posted an image of what can happen as you can see the battery is bulging in the middle.

thanks. the top of the battery definitely isn't swelling like that, and i don't have a Y0 screwdriver handy to pull it out and check the bottom. i'll have to check that later...

I have replaced my battery but but now some of he keyboard functions don't work. Well sometimes they do and then don't. Cannot use the QAZ volume increase and erase button. I would think that either your ribbon cable is connect or not. Not that its partially functioning

So I have a loose light bulb in the ceiling socket, when someone upstairs jumps a bit the light goes off. So it's got to be the wall switch that controls it? Can't be the bulb as it works most of the time? Then it's got to be the wiring? Nope! It's just a loose bulb!!

Same logic here look for the simple physical faults first then look deeper!

QAZ and the ESC key (erase?) are all on the same column connection so you have a connection break likely a loose connection issue (Ribbon cable and/or corroded connector being the common ones) The Volume key doesn't make sense on its own, but that uses a different line with a few other keys. If you where to follow the diagnostic process I explained above you'll likely find them.

I have the same problem. With mine it's the Es, Gs and Hs. In fact, when typing this, I had to type each E, G and H about six times each.

It's intermittent. Some days it works fine. Others not so much.
