Why does my controller "stick" as if it is being pressed up/sideways

When I try to use one of my controllers it acts like I am pushing the L3 or R3 button a certain way. It does not always do this, but it has gotten to the point where I have quit using that controller.

Also, the controller never had anything spill on it, or is it sticky.

Thanks,

-Rob

Controllers often gain this trait, especially game controllers. There could be some broken stalks from the triggers on the inside of them, causing friction and pressing down the button internally. You could disassemble the top portion and see if there is anything of the sort. There should be some guides here on iFixit that show you how to disassemble it without much hassle!

After disassembling one of those analog sticks that is sticking (staying in the top position), I’ve noticed that the bottom part of the plastic stick that touches the bottom plate has been damaged due to friction at the joint, and it appears to have worn out some plastic there. Probably the easiest fix is to replace the whole analog stick part, the other more involved way would be to use some epoxy or cover the area with a thin layer of plastic. 3D printing the piece might be an option, but I’m not sure how long that might last, and it needs more precision than the cheap 3d printers can provide these days..
