credit being used up
My phone is using up my payg credit when turned on but not making any calls does anyone know how to shut down all other functions unless I want to use them

Have you tried disabling the phone's mobile data connection or adjusting the download setting (check the user manual for your phone) so that it will only download when using WiFi?
It may be that apps are downloading in the background unbeknownst to you which costs you credits, if you have to pay for "data" download or if you have exceeded the download limit if the phone is on a plan.
Be aware that disabling the mobile data connection means that you can't get/make MMS texts (texts with pictures or videos etc) or go online but phone calls and SMS (plain text) will still work.
