compatible logic boards late 2011 and mid 2012 model A1286

Is it possible to replace the late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" logicboard 2.4 GHz i7 with the mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15" 2.7 GHz i7 board? Any experience shared on this subject would grately appreciated.

Specifications shows difference:

  • 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0

GPU difference as below:

  • 2.4 GHz A1286 Early 2011 to Late 2011
    • Intel HD Graphics 3000 (384 MB shared)
    • AMD Radeon HD 6750M (1 GB dedicated)
  • 2.7 GHz A1286 Mid 2012
    • Intel HD Graphics 4000 (384 MB shared)
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (1 GB dedicated)

A person already answered parts of different years cannot be swapped (thanks, originalmachead ...just curious if someone actually tried)

Replacement for late 2011 MacBook Pro 15"

Still looking for a way to upgrade my old MBP (make it turn on again as it got more issues than just logic board)

Well... I can tell you the 2011's & 2012 models are the basically the same. The issue you face is the LVDS cable connection on the logic board as for some reason Apple used a slightly different version of the same connector between the 2011 and 2012 models. The issue is the width of the cable's connector tang is slightly larger in the 2011 models.

So... going the other way you are trying to go (2011 to 2012) you need to either replace the LVDS cable or carefully file the edge a bit. In the direction you'er going you'll need to replace the cable as there is the risk of the connector to short across.

Otherwise you can swap the logic boards!

@danj FYI I did the 17" MBP Late 2011 to 2012 board last week. No problems with the fit but having charging issues, don't know if it is the board but putting a new mag-safe board in tomorrow. May have to ask a question on this.

@mayer - Haven't tried swapping the logic boards around on the 17" models. I don't remember there being a 2012 model. But all of the MacBookPro8,3 should swap about with out any issues.

@legendary10k Erik, were you successful in doing so, including replacing the LVDS cable?

@radgravy - I'm running a converted system now! I've done a few conversions for a few people as well.

The only issue as I stated before is the LVDS cable tang is a bit wider so you need to sand the edge down a bit. Apple used a different vendors connector which is pin compatible but for some reason is slightly smaller than the cable end connector.

@danj Thank you good sir!

GRACIAS @danj Genial! El resto de componentes: ram, bateria, disipadores de calor, ecc, es completamente igual entre la mbp 8.2 mid 2011 y la early 2012? Gracias por tu ayuda!!

THANKS @danj Great! The rest of the components: ram, battery, heat sinks, ecc, is it completely the same between the mbp 8.2 mid 2011 and the early 2012? Thanks for your help!!

Depending on where you buy the logic board it will likely come with the heatsink. Even still you likely want to refresh the thermal paste don't over do it! A little goes a long way.

The battery is the same, but the SO-DIMM's are different!
