MacBook Pro 15" 22 Core Duo Model A1150

Hi all,

I seem to be getting a rather worrying intermittent noise when the screen brightness is lowered....

When I say intermittent - actually when dim and tilted at a certain angle, the noise will start. It's like a crunching grrrrr sound from the lower centre of the screen.

On full brightness this does not happen.

I seem to have a dull line in the screen from top to bottom in the middle, it just doesnt seem to be as bright as the rest of the screen.

The laptop is second hand and I have a sneaky suspicion it has been dropped at some point. The screen itself has very little tension on the hinges so will easily slam shut or fall the other way.

Could this all be related?

You may have multiple problems. Lets address the sound problem first. There's nothing in the screen to make a sound, the most likely cause is a failing left fan. You can remove the top cover without taking it off and listen with the back end lifted up or just disconnect the power to the fan and see if it quits before replacing it. Next hook the machine up to an external monitor and compare the screens and let us know your findings.

To check your inverter, hook your machine up to an external monitor. If your Books screen dims and the external is OK, then the inverter may be failing. I have not heard one failing before but I usually get them after they have failed. Here's how I replace one: To check your inverter, hook your machine up to an external monitor. Hi there,

It sounds more like a short than a fan issue. I have SMC FanControl installed and set fans to max to test and they're running perfectly with no sound issues.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the inverter is faulty...

Could that effect the dulling in the centre of the screen?

LCD inverter boards will sometimes make a sound on their way out. I can see no reason why a failing inverter board would have less than a uniform effect on the backlight. - I like your picture.
