Water damage; no screen, no chime, fan spinning + green charger light

Issue here with an early 2015 Macbook Air A1466 [820 00165 A]. Started with some liquid damage around CPU area, when after no sign of life, just a charger light.

- Measured all "always present" rails on the logic board, all are in their respective Volt range from S5 to S0 (including Vcore)

- Gently cleaned the whole board with a soft toothbrush and 93% alcohol

- Fan is spinning and sensors seem to be working fine (spinning after I cleaned with alcohol)

- Charging light shows orange light when battery is disconnected (green when connected)

- No chime

- No screen

Already went to an Apple Reseller here in Brazil before I started testing myself but they just replace parts, not component level at an equivalent of nearly $600.

To me this seems like a CPU issue, but can I test this? And if the CPU is really fried, can it be replaced in a repair shop that has access to a hot air station so they can change the CPU/GPU from let's say a donor board?

Many thanks,

Nick

I know @refectio can do microsoldering. maybe he can help?

@captainsnowball I think @reecee is more suited for this :>).

G3H is just the first of tenths of power lines. If you have an orange light at the charger rather than green it means the board starts having faults right after that, at power handling level. Changing the CPU with the hope it would start working fine would be just like playing dice with your money providing you'll find someone who can do the job reliably in your area. You can test sensors only if cpu is working, through Apple hardware test, but the fact that you have no chime and no image means the cpu is probably not working.

The fan spinning doesn't mean everything else works unfortunately. The cost of used Macbook air logic boards is probably less than the cost of a Cpu replacement. If you know for sure screen and all the rest of the machine parts are working fine, save yourself time and headaches and start looking for a new board. Just my two cents :)

Thanks for that Arbaman. I checked all the "always present" rails, including:

PPBUS_G3H

PPBUS_S5_HS_COMPUTING_ISNS

PPBUS_S5_HS_OTHER_ISNS

PPDCIN_G3H_ISOL

PPDCIN_G3H

PP3V42_G3H

PPVRTC_G3H

PP5V_S5

PP5V_S4RS3

PP5V_S0

But also all the 3V rails and CPU Vcore rails etc. All seem fine, so seems to me that the CPU is fried as in that area was the water damage too. A repair shop told me these specific logic boards are very sensitive to water and easily fry CPU's.

I agree with you to save headache, but for this specific model (late 2015) there are very little logic boards available and usually ebay doesn't ship to Brazil unfortunately :/ The only logic boards I can find are going for around $600 and that's almost the price of a complete MBA...

Anyways, will be updating here. Thanks for the help!

I've made a brief check and seen that the early 2015 board in the Us is readily available at many vendors for about 300$ which is close to the price you'd be charged for a CPU replacement at a reliable american lab. Have a look at usual 2nd hand board sources :)

@mrdiceys have you ultrasonic cleaned the board? Toothbrush and alcohol won't clean under the CPU, and if there was a lot of liquid around the CPU this will be underneath the CPU too.

Plugged a USB mouse in to see if it lights up? If yes and PPVCC_S0_CPU is present, it indicates the CPU is getting power and the MacBook is booting

The board is getting ultrasonic cleaned tomorrow and i've tried the mouse test after you asked and the mouse does indeed light up when plugged in the usb port. CPU seems getting power so. Will wait for tomorrow and update here. Thanks for the help so far :)

Logic board is repaired. In my inexperienced mind I thought the PPBUS_G3H had an acceptable 8.3V but should be 8.6V (with acceptable 8.5'ishV) which was why the CPU was not turning on due to missing SMC. Replaced a few bad capacitors and put in the ultrasonic cleaner and works as a charm now.

Many thanks again for the help here :)
