Broken charger port - can I use other iPod parts to fix

I've managed to rip out the bit of the ipod that connects to a charger/syncs with a pc. I want to replace it but don't want to fork out for a whole new logic board as they cost not much less than a new ipod would. So with this in mind, could I buy a cheaper logic board (ie one from an earlier generation and/or cheaper model) and take off the charging port and affix it to the logic board I have now?

Hey, do you know of anyone who would do this? I went to the Apple Store and lets just say I found a worm there.

any good phone repair shop should be able to do it if they can do micro soldering or try a tv repair place too.

Can be done if you are experienced in micro soldering otherwise I suggest zfixit.com under $50

you can but you should get a new connector. Sparkfun has them. http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8035 You will need a good soldering iron and soldering wick to install it.

The pin outs for that show the following compatibility: Used in 3rd and later generation iPods for charging, connecting to a PC via USB or Firewire, to a stereo via line-out, to a serial device (controlled via the Apple Accessory Protocol). This connector exists in most Apple iPod MP3 players (iPod 3G, 4G, 5G Video, 5.5G Video, Nano (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G), Mini, Classic, Touch, Touch 2G, and iPhone (1G, 3G and 3GS))

This connector from sparkfun fits the 4th gen original iPod but unfortunately it doesn't match or fit the the 6th gen iPod classic logic board.

This is a pretty old question, but since you dug it up, you can get the dock connector from here. Better like to solder small pieces ;-)

Hi, a little self promotion, I follow iFixit and have learned a great deal from them. If you want to try your self, you can but please keep in mind that the 5th Gen Classic is easy to open but the port is not something that can be done on a 1st try. As others have mentioned soldering wick ... not going to work! You need a special de-soldering station as the solder is buried through the anchor hole at four points and wick does not get it done ... trust me, I have tried ... many times.... and then I purchased the correct desoldering station for this repair that works on touch 2/3 and all classics. Leave this particular repair to a seasoned professional that has the right equipment. I run http://www.bustedapple.com (National Mail-in) and http://www.zfixit.com (Local San Antonio TX Site) and you can mail in repair on a classic charge port at bustedapple.com. I have the best price for this repair ($45 + Shipping on a 5/6/7 Classic), easy does it for me .... but the iPod must have have been working prior!

Thanks,

Manuel
