MY iMac G5 HAS GREEN SCREEN - WHAT TO DO?

My iMac G5 (model prior to iSight) screen has turned greenish. Otherwise the computer works ok. Any suggestions about solutions? I am told it is a motherboard issue. I am not at all technical but I was able to replace RAM cards in this model without a problem! That's probably the limit of my expertise! Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Any magnets around your screen (like a refrigerator stick on)?

No nothing quite so simple I'm sorry to say. Please see my further comments to mayer 51k

Here's a solution for a green screen:http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/to...

What system are you running? What RAM configuration? How much free hard drive space do you have?

Try starting up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and starting while holding down the "C" key. If it starts OK and no green screen, then the problem is with your hard drive or a corrupted system folder. If so, go to the second screen pull down menu, Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the hard drive.

Does your serial number fall into one of these ranges?

Serial Number ranges:

W8435xxxxxx – W8522xxxxxx

QP435xxxxxx – QP522xxxxxx

CK435xxxxxx – CK522xxxxxx

YD435xxxxxx – YD522xxxxxx

Many thanks. I tried that but nothing doing.

My serial number does fall into one of these categories but I was told that the defect recall regarding this had elapsed a couple of years ago. In fact, I believe I missed the cut-off by a matter of weeks. As a result, I bought a new iMac. I was hoping to restore this one as a backup.

A motherboard repair at an appointed Apple dealer was in four figures so it does not make sense to go that way. What are the options? Cannibalize the machine? Maybe take out the hard drive and have it wiped clean? Are there second hand motherboards out there? I am afraid I wouldn't know a good one from a bad one and second hand parts are unlikely to come with any guaranty. It seems such a shame to have to trash the machine.

Incidentally, I looked at the screen for the first time in many months and, to be more precise, there is a greenish/blue hue and what looks like multiple columns of white oblong boxes which run across the entire face of the screen.

In addition to the other things I asked (to which I don't have answers), please hook it up to an external monitor and tell us the results. What was the diagnosis from Apple?
