CPU Fan not spinning on iMac 27" 2011

Hello,

I have a CPU fan on iMac 2011 27" that is not working. I have tested the fan on optical header and works, tested on another working iMac and works, used a different fan and doesn't work, have tested another working power supply but still doesn't turn.

I'm wondering if it's a motherboard / logic board fault causing this issue.

I have replaced the thermal paste on heatsink but only think I noticed is the safety ring that goes around the cpu heatsink screw to keep it in place is a bit fiddly but have still managed to screw the 4 screws all evenly to the logic board and the computer powers up and loads into system but mac fan control shows 0 RPM and doesn't spin.

The only thing I could possibly think is the heat sensor on the heatsink but after carefully looking at it, it seems to be all fine. Not sure if faulty cpu heat sensor would cause it to not spin.

I'm steering more towards the cpu head fan header (socket) that you plug fan connector could have some issue but doesn't appear to be loose at all.

Has anyone come across this fault before and could point me in the right direction, much appreciated.

Adrian, did you find a solution and/or reason for this fault? I have same issue.

When the fan working, and loks it like motherboard problem, you can connect the fan permanently to USB +5V... maybe you need some resistor, its not some 100% solution on this problem, but with always on fan from usb you can not make motherboard overheat....

Hi VojTech I've got the same issue on my Imac 27" 2011. I'm not good enough to diagnose which circuit or fuse is out of order. I've red that you suggest to provide power through Usb 5V. Could you give some explanation please? I also thought of connection CPU fan to ODD fan (which work perfect) but I wonder if the two Fans would not "ask" too much to the electronic and if I would not "blow' the ODD fan too? Could you help me? Thank you. C.B from France.

Dont double up the odd fan, will certainly overload the circuit. I have the same issue with my 2011 imac, i pulled the motherboard out and there is a burned out circuit just below the cpu fan conector, just out of sight by the computer chassis, reason i noticed it is because when i turned my computer on one day i saw a yellow flash of light followed by a sizzle sound with a quick puff of white smoke come from the ram compartment... computer cpu fan stoped working that very day :(
