iPod Touch 3g detected as iPhone

Hi All

I have an iPod Touch 3g 64 GB that is detected by iTunes as an iPhone. The device was purchased used and it has no icons on the screen. It does get detected by Win XP SP3 and other computers as an iDevice in DFU mode. I have been reading threads and post on multiple sites but so far I have found no solution. I have tried to uninstall and install iTunes, different usb ports, disabling WiFi card, complete restore with new 4.3.1 firmware, etc, etc...Is it possible a hardware mulfunction? As anybody fixed this problem before?Any command that would help me diagnose this problem?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Update

It seems that at the battery terminal of the logic board I get no voltage. This is probably why the battery does not charge. I have been poking around on the logic board and it seems that the 5 volts from the USB cable are getting on the board but I am not sure how the output is supposed to be routed to the battery terminal pads on the logic board.Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Thanks

take a look at this link... you can try felixdebrun and shift click(PC) or alt restore(mac) for a fresh install of ipod software, also mentions checking the usb for damage, etc. this is also a good site to rummage around for error codes and fixes...error 3194

Does itunes tell you anything like iphone needing to be restored? Have you tried a hard reset on the ipod? Are you using a USB ports that comes right of the motherboard, most likely the ports in the back? Do a soft reset first

1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the unit until a red slider appears

2. Drag the slider.

3. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Now if you have no luck with that perform a hard reset by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.

You may have to also try to restore your device under itunes, even so it tells you its a phone.

And as this forum shows you are not the only one. Good Luck and let us know how it is going.

Hi, and thank you for your answer. I have tried a restore with iTunes but after decompressing the firmware, iTunes resets the iPod and it goes back to DFU mode, and it does this every single time displaying error 3194.As far as the other methods. different USB ports on my laptop, I have tried all of them, I have 3 and all of them show same result. I have tried different PC , Win 7, XP Vista, 64 bits and 32 bits OS, even one Mac. All show my iPod as an iPhone...I have been battling this issue for at least 2 weeks off and on...I will keep the forum posted if I find a solution.

Massimo check on here http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.p... and see if that will help you out.

Thanks so much for the info. I tried it but I am still having errors. First of all, do you mean the iPod in Recovery mode? My device is stuck in DFU mode but somehow I can't execute the iRecovery -f command.

Got USB

No iPhone/iPod found

OK, because the thread on the link is a little old and because apple does not go back to the 3.1.2 firmware that I have on my iPod , I have downloaded the updated 4.3.1 firmware with the iRecovery -f command. That was succesfull. After that I have unplugged the cable and reconected it, but the screen did not turn white and on the following iRecovery -s command i got Got USB...no iPhone/iPod found.

First I got this:

Successfully uploaded file!

Executing it...

00 32 00 00 06 00

00 FFFFFFB8 0B 00 07 00

00 32 00 00 08 00

Closing USB connection...

and then I got this:

Got USB

no iPhone/iPod found

This nifty little trick has stopped all iTunes Error messages dead in their tracks. Give it a try. It worked for me after two days of trying to restore a phone in recovery mode

.

Step 1. On your Mac, go to your “Applications” folder. Step 2. Now navigate to the “Utilities” folder. Step 3. Launch "Terminal". Step 4. Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" (without quotes) and hit return. Step 5. Enter your password

Step 6. Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” in front of the text.

Step 7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O.

Step 8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X. I found ctrl X didn't exit for me, so Try "return' key after Control O to save and exit.

Step 9. Restore your iDevice

.

Windows

Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu. Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc Step 5. In "files of type:" select all documents Step 6. Open "hosts" Step 7. Delete all line that has "gs.apple.com" or something like that Step 8. Hit Save Step 9. Restore your device

Just used this this morning to update and jailbreak and iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.1. I updated and resored in DFU Mode. It worked after iTunes gave me several error messages and leaving my phone in recovery mode. Good Luck.

+now this is good stuff.

I have already tried this. This will work if you use Tinyumbrella to redirect the request from the Apple server to retrieve the shsh file needed for the authentication.I do not have the original shsh file for this device , because it was not mine from the beginning. I have only found shsh file for 4.1 and 4.3 firmware...and those did not work, because apparently they were when the iDevice was already jailbroken. The main issue is that my device is detected as an iPhone, therefor is trying to connect to an iPhone server and when I try to restore the device with an iPod touch firmware, the 3194 error comes up. Thanks again for all your research.

Massimo take a look through this forum.http://modmyi.com/forums/ipod-touch-jail... and see if they can give you a bit more info. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.p... also check this out with regards to your shsh http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.p...

http://hackstor.blogspot.com/2010/04/aut... and http://www.iphoneheat.com/2010/04/ih8sn0... lots of info but I hope this will help you

Ok, I am back. NOw thru Cydia I found one more shsh, 4.3.1 which should make me able to restore\upgrade to the latest firmware revision, which should be great, at least I can use the iPod. Well that fails as well with error code 11 if I use tinyumbrella or 3194 if I go straight to Apple. i am just running out of ideas and patience.

don't get to frustrated and try to many things at once. you are going to lose control of the situation. Keep a log of what program works and what steps you have taken. Otherwise you get lost and will take to many steps out of sequence. Sometimes it works when you step away from it for a short while
