2 completely dead iPhone 6s plus devices

I obtained 2 completely dead iPhone 6s plus devices. They do not charge or are recognized by iTunes (with or without battery connected to the motherboard). They do not warm up. I currently do not have an ammeter, but I used a battery pack that automatically detects devices. These are not detected. I suspect that both devices have a bad U2 IC, but I'm not sure of that. I already ordered a new battery and dock connector. But these are still on their way. I ordered these just to be sure.

Will the device boot with a new charged battery if the U2 IC (normally only for charging and USB connectivity) is dead? Or are there any more steps I can perform?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards, Stefan

iPhones do bootup with charged batteries that have a bad Tristar (U2) charging IC.

Some things to note:

If you can't get an apple logo with battery unplugged the Tristar is bad provided you can turn the phone on with a charged battery.

Once you get the phone on you can also try plugging the phone to a computer to see if it detects via iTunes / 3Utools.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for your valuable information. I will test it as soon as I have my new battery.

I will report the result then.

If it is indeed a Tristar problem, perhaps I'm going to give it a try to do it myself. I can solder but have no experience in micro-soldering, but at least I can give it a try.

Your information is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Stefan

You will need a hot air station to replace Tristar, if you have soldering iron only you cant replace it as the solder balls are under the chip.

Hi Ben, I will order a hot air station as it comes always in handy. It's going to be quite a challenge because I never did such a thing. I will order the Tristar as well. I will probably need it anyway so :) Thanks again for your help ;) Kind regards, Stefan

Here is some good information on replacing the tristar chip:

iPhone 6S Tristar IC Replacement Tips

Hi Ben, Thank you very much. It's a really good starting point. I will exercise first a bit on another device to see if I succeed in removing the components without pulling the pads beneath the chip.
