Does it matter which way I mount my winch?

I recently obtained a winch for my ATV. I mounted it with the cable winding and unwinding from the top of the spool, not the bottom. After mounting it, I found that the cable is supposed to wind and unwind from the bottom of the spool, not the top of the spool.

Does it matter which way it is mounted?

Your controls will be reversed. Instead of winding up it will be unwinding.

You were right, Mr. Mayer! The controls are reversed; otherwise, the winch works perfectly!

The winch is actually mounted on the back of my riding lawn mower. Sometimes I get stuck in the mud when I am cutting the grass. It has been a real hassle to get unstuck, so I asked my wife to get me a winch for Father's Day. Last night I successfully pulled the lawn mower using the winch, so I look forward to not getting stuck anymore!
