Power and Battery Issues

Okay, love this website, first of all. Got the used G3 for my husband and installed a DVD/CD-R drive into it. It worked fine before this but now that it's all put together (your manuals were awesome!) the computer does not always want to turn on. The battery was not the best to begin with and now it won't charge the battery at all. It won't even charge my good battery from my own G3. His G3 will power up fine with my good battery but it won't charge the battery. His battery won't charge or turn on, even with the adapter. It seems to not even read that the adapter is plugged into it. What did I do!????

Hey,

Thanks for the help. I tried what you said about the DC-in and both suggestions did not work. Still the same thing. What is this PMU and PRAM? How do you reset these? I was really hoping for the DC-in line; it sounded so simple, but the way my luck has been going simple is avoiding me like a plague.

Thanks,

Hi! First I would remove extended RAM, battery, and Airport, just to have those out of the way and simplify the troubleshooting situation. Next, I would pop the bottom off again, along with the bottom shielding, and make sure the DC-in is firmly connected to the underside of the logic board. This is a beige plug which connects via a long strip to the DC-in plug that the AC adapter plugs into. The issues you've mentioned are consistent with the DC-in being disconnected or possibly not fully seated. Also, you can re-seat it and test with the laptop open, i.e. I would test it with the bottom off, just to save the time of ripping the laptop apart again if this ends up not being the answer.

If that doesn't work, I'd say unplug the DC-in from the logic board, and let the computer sit completely disconnected from power overnight. DC-ins are weird little creatures, and sometimes they hold a charge which causes them to malfunction. I know it sounds strange, but letting them sit for a while can sometimes set them straight.

Good luck, and let me know what happens! Resetting the PMU and PRAM is never a bad idea either if you haven't tried that already, but I have a hunch about the DC-in.
