Can't Restore as not recognised in iTunes or Windows

Recently discovered daughter's iPod Photo 30GB, unused for 2yrs. Wouldn't charge so replaced battery. Not 100% sure if it is ok as iPod keeps trying to Restart itself so have been unable to know whether charged up in the usual way.

Have the Folder icon and sometimes the Sad iPod logo. I think I need to restore iPod but having problems. Have managed to get into Disk Mode but keeps making clunking noises when in this mode. Whenever I try connecting to my PC in order to Restore, it is not recognised in iTunes or PC and sometimes I get a message on my PC saying that the USB attachment ( i.e. iPod) has malfunctioned and Windows 7 can't recognise it. Have tried different usb ports and wires to no avail.

Opened iPod up and disconnected battery & hard drive for 15mins as suggested elsewhere (apparently this is what some repair shops do in China), but iPod no different when reconnected. Also, tried to find reset button on hard drive but couldn't see it anywhere. Have seen photos of other iPod hard drives where there is a very obvious reset hole. Does anyone know where it is on this model?

Does it sound like I need a new hard drive, or is there anything else it might be?

The iPod is otherwise in excellent condition and I'm very reluctant to give up if I can fix it as it's a lot of money to throw away.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated!!!

There is not a reset hole on these drives. The continuous restarting is generally indicative of a faulty logic board. The clicking noise described sounds like a bad hard drive. I would start by replacing the hard drive first and then move on to the logic board if you are still experiencing issues.

Hi, many thanks for your advice. I can't really afford to replace both items so I want to be as sure as I can that whichever one I choose to replace is the most likely cause of the problem.

If I give more info, perhaps that may give a better indication, although I appreciate it may be a case of trial & error!

The iPod is currently in Diagnostics Mode and I've been trying to scan the Hard Drive.Screen reads:

Read Verify Scan

Scan takes a while

Before Scan:

After Scan:

14ror!

Any ideas what this means please?

(Now stuck like this, can't seem to reset it!)

Also, I'm not sure if it is charging properly. It has a new battery and I've used a mains power connector (which I know is working correctly because a friend's iPod has been charged using it) to charge it up. However, although the small battery symbol (top right) appears full, I also sometimes get the large low battery symbol on screen. When being charged in Disk Mode, the battery power symbol moves but appears to jump backwards & forwards(possibly coinciding with the clunks that the hard drive does in this mode).

Does any of this point to replacing the hard drive more than the logic board?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

It sounds more like a bad logic board at this point, but as you have noted, you will need to try and replace one part at a time to know for sure.
