MacBook wont boot past grey screen

Was running Tiger just fine...Upgraded to SL and after restart im stuck with a grey/white screen. I can hear the mac tone on startup, and can hear SL music. Booted into target mode and ran disk utility on that comps HD then reinstalled SL. Same result. Tried to boot to verbose/boot from DVD/boot to anything and it all seems to work by what it sounds like...EXample booting from DVD i hear the dvd fire up. I just cant see anything but a white/grey screen.

Try starting up in Safe mode by holding down the shift key.

nothing happens...the only boot command i can get it to do is boot into target mode..could this be a screen issue?

If all you can get is Target Mode, use it. Run Disk Utilities from the other Mac and repair the hard drive.

also have repaired disk using target mode...the comp acts as if its working fine just something with the display i can figure out.

Ok, hook it up to an external monitor and see what you get.

Try restarting the P ram! To do this, you need to turn the computer off. Turn on and immediately press "Command, Option, P, R". Locate these before you restart the computer, because they need to be pressed before the computer makes the "chime" sound. Press and hold these buttons until the computer "chimes" 5 times. Then your P-ram should be restated. See if that works and if it doesn't, let me know. ;) Hope that helps!!

Anybody know what the cause of this is?

Im having what seems like the same problem on a used A1181.

Blank white/grey screen with start up tone. As far as I know (what I was told) the HD was wiped clean. None of the start-up commands that I've heard of make any difference, including holding "C" while booting from the brand new set of restore discs I got from Apple. I've reset the P-ram, I've removed the ram chip and tried it in both slots while ensuring that it was properly seated. Ive attempted connecting an external display with a "mini-dvi to HDMI" connector to my TV, TV said no support. (dont know if there is a setting in the mac to use an external display or if it should automaticaly addapt?) I just tried booting in TDM to a Windows XP based PC running MacDrive 8. Macdrive shows the Macbook HD as being empty with 148gb free (in accordance with what I was told by the previous owner) and upon running repair option it finds no errors.

Not sure where to go from here, logic would suggest that the display and or display cable is kaput. But I've read some things that suggest the logic board may be the problem or the HD dont totally trust what MacDrive said 100%) and at $200 bucks for the display and cable I dont want to buy them only to find out that it needs another $200+ in parts.

Is there another way of testing the HD and/or more importantly the Logic Board?
