What can I try to resolve my camera problem?

I dropped my closed FinePix F900EXR camera and now I keep getting an error code Turn off the camera and turn on again.” I cannot clear this message and cannot take pictures now. The camera makes a CLICK when I turn it on and the lens tries to crank out. What is the most likely cause?

Sorry to say this doesn’t sound good.

But never give up!

So you do receive an error code on the screen, so it sounds like its the motor/servo which controls the extension of the lens elements.

There may be a method to ‘factory reset’ or otherwise connect it to your computer, and use software from fujifilm to run a diagnostic. But you may have to be prepared to open it up! and carefully disassemble it until you can locate the issue

Is there any damage to the housing?

where is it located?

how bad does it look?

There is no damage anywhere that I can see. When I start the camera the lens starts out , there is a “click” and the lens goes back in the camera. Then I get the message to turn off and restart the camera...over and over.

Ok so the lense does come out, from your recollection, does it appear to come out/extend to the full amount as before? because, if it's failing to fully extend there is likely an error code produced internally, because the encoder which controls the zoom/focus amount is not counting the proper iterations - not completing the power-up cycle. There is 2 major directions i would take next, the camera may be fine, but there is now some misalignment of the 'encoder' and the lens elements, which cooould possibly be corrected with a 'reset' or 'zeroing' of the software/firmware - i'm not aware of any particular fujifilm PC software to connect to the camera in a service mode - but a good start would be to search for 'FinePix F900EXR firmware update' because during that process, 'said encoder/controller would be reset. Also 'FinePix F900EXR how to factory reset' - as there may be a button combination to 'hard reset' the camera.

Now the other direction - Get yourself a nice set of tech screwdrivers, and....

We'll open that little guy up!

Very carefully (obviously) put down a small towel, and screw by screw take it apart from the bottom up, with a focus toward the front, where the possible damage/misalignment occurred internally, just make sure you take close mental notes of every part you remove, and organize it all in a line across the towel, so it can all be put back together nice and neat. Something in there is acting up, and it WILL be found :) Either way you have nothing to loose, i would exhaust the firmware/resetting options first.

Wow! Thanks so much! You have given me some excellent information. I believe that there is a firmware update and I will go there first. I will keep you updated on my (hopefully) progress. I would like to avoid surgery but I will go there if necessary. Thanks for helping me. Here I go......... :-)

GREAT!

Good i'm so happy there is a firmware update. Given your description there is a chance that may help, that is of course if there isn't something misaligned mechanically inside, which i fear ....well ... see if that helps!

I do a little amateur photography just about, i have a couple nikon semi-pro cams, and i've run into a few issues ... especially when my 70-300 lens motor game up, aaaaand i decided to fix it myself :)

Next step is ... oOOohh gotta open er'up - no big deal, you'll feel like an Ace if you do actually fix it, and that'll be fun to tell the friends :)

Wow this summer is so nice eh :)
