Dell Dimension 9150 Diagnostic Lights 1, 2 and 3

Got handed down a Dell Dimension 9150 couple of years ago. Everything was fine, it was a great HTPC. Ran Win 7 without a problem. One day last week, while I was in the middle of reformatting a secondary hard disk to prepare for its sale, it suddenly rebooted with lights 1, 2 and 3 in green and a blinking cursor on the screen. No beeps or amber lights.

What I’ve done:

Ensured that every single part (RAM, HDD, optical drives, expansion cards) is plugged in and well seated.

Reset the CMOS and changed the battery.

Swapped the hard disk, RAM and video card to a known working, compatible alternative but to no avail.

Everything was working until I was in the middle of reformatting a secondary hard disk in Windows 7. Anyone know why?

Hi @inifluo

Try this method

If you have multiple memory, test with a stick at a time or at different slot

How about power supply?

Thanks for the swift response. I’ve tried the RAM, different combos. Hope it’s not the PSU, otherwise I might as well throw the whole thing out instead. How do you test it?

Hi @inifluo ,

If you have a DMM (Digital MultiMeter) you can use its' Voltmeter function to test the PSU's various voltage outputs for correct voltage, whilst it is disconnected from the motherboard.

Here's how to do this

Did you try starting the PC with the HDDs/DVD disconnected (power wise) to see if you can get into BIOS at all, just in case a drive is faulty and dragging down the voltage?

I'm afraid I don't have that. Yeah, I've tried disconnecting all optical and hard drives before starting up. Just getting numbers 1, 2, 3 with a black screen. No BIOS. I've also tried resetting the CMOS jumper by moving it to the adjacent couple of pins for about 5 seconds before moving it back. Still nothing. Oh well, I appreciate your help, guys.

to add on..... i think some model of dell... during this period of time ... is notorious for bloated capacitor....

inspect on the motherboard....

Hi @inifluo ,

If you're not sure about whether the capacitors "may" be faulty or not, take some close up pictures of the ones you're not sure of and post back here.
