The headphone jack on my laptop doesnt record my microphone

Some context, this laptop has a two audio jacks, one for sound and one for a microphone. In the past, when i plugged my headset in the sound jack i would be able to hear properly and the microphone would also be working through the sound jack. Now, whenever i plug it in the sound goes through the speakers and my headset at the same time and only goes over to only the headset after i twist it a bit. In addition, the sound jack randomly stopped picking up my microphone and now my laptop microphone doesnt work either.

Does anyone have a clue on how to fix this?

Go to “Sound” on your laptop. You can do this by right clicking on the little sound icon on the bottom right of your laptop. Once you right clicked on it, go to recordings.

In “Sound” go to the tab “recordings” on the top, look at all the devices.

I don’t know what yours may be called.

That is a picture of what it may look like. Once you find the microphone you are trying to use. Right click on it and make sure it’s set as default, and enabled. Disable the other ones you are not using (I recommend) and go back to it if you need the others enabled.

The fact you have to twist the cord to get audio through the jack, tells me the headset you are trying to use is not very functional. Please try what I suggested and see if the laptop microphone works again then we can get to the other things.

PS. Specify what kind of headset you have…. “earbuds”…. “cheap headset”….etc etc

Multiple headsets have the same problem? ,Or just that one?

So, i've tried to get the laptop mic to work but i couldnt, also i forgot to mention yesterday when i tried to use push to talk in a game with my laptop mic and it worked for a second but then it stopped working again.

My headset is a couple months old hyperx cloud revolver S so i really don't think its faulty since my earbuds and old headset have the same problem.

Here's what my sound manager looks like; https://gyazo.com/880ea94789c5aaf206a78b... the microphone should be on. Whenever turn off the microphone and turn on stereo mix the microphone test and discord do pick up my laptop audio.

Thanks for the help!

@mischa

Ok so on the headset now, as you need that working right?

Looking it up, did it come with an USB converter? Your laptop's sound card may suck.

Plugging the headset into the USB adapter may fix the issue as it will then use that sound card instead of your laptops.

(3.55mm jack to USB to Laptop.)

If you don't have that, then you can also try buying this

That will split the cable, so you can use the mic and headset separately and more efficiently. Then you would just go to "Sound" and repeat the process with it.

yeah actually it did come with one of those i think, that might actually be my saviour since i wouldnt have to use the laptop jacks but i'm 99% it's in my other house right now so i'll get back to you on sunday when i get there.

@mischa

Ok, I'll see ya then.

Well, i used the USB cable and everything is working. Apparently i never even used the surround sound function?? %#*@ i feel stupid, thanks for the help bro.
