Why new battery is stuck at 63% charge?

I have a mid 2007 macbook that works great.

i’ve installed a new battery and i’m using a new magsafe charger (both not OEM). I see that the charge is stuck at 63% and the magsafe’s light is orange for a couple of minutes and then turns green. the leds on the battery all light up meaning, apparently, that the battery is fully charged.

Could it be that the battery is ok and the problem is that the battery doesn’t communicate well with the OS and that’s why the OS thinks the charge is 63%?

the first time i used the battery and charger i got a 100% charge according to OS X.

i’ve already tried SMC reset with no success. could the problem be fixed by totally draining the battery?

Well i decided to try by draining all the charge of the battery. i did it and then when recharging it stuck at 57%. faulty battey maybe? then i decided that in the meantime i buy another battery i would use the one i have so i left it charging like a day or so without using the macbook too much. the light was green.

today i saw the battery percentage indicator and says 100% charged. strange. i unplugged the magsafe and used the machine normally. went down to 92%. i plugged the charger again and started charging like normally would do, but instead of showing 93% and up, now it tells me its charging and that it has 74% charge. i believe it is a faulty battery that is causing all this.

Let’s do some testing of the battery. Complete the guide below; be sure to upload two screenshots of the coconutBattery window to your existing question! Do one screenshot with the MagSafe charger in and one with the MagSafe charger out.

You may may want to review this guide as the charger might be the issue. Be sure that the charger contacts are clean and unobstructed.

i've posted the screenshots as an answer though they are not the answer. i'm new and i don't quite know how things work here.

@danj those coconutBattery numbers look a bit strange, do you agree?

yes, the maximum charge looks strange. i bought the battery from a reputed seller so i thought intially that the magsafe board could be the problematic. i'm currently charging from a 56% and is fine with orange light but when it gets to 63% it will stop, i suspect...

There's a few issues here which I can't honestly answer as its been quite awhile that I've worked on these older MacBook's.

First the battery firmware looks odd '00.02' That would put this as a very early release (Alpha) a full point release 01.00 would be the first release with the product. This firmware is within the battery and could be what is effecting things.

Looking at CoconutBattery, it does look a bit screwy, but, I think this is mostly due to the fact this is an older release.

I would try resetting the SMC to see if that helps How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

I would also contact the battery maker to see if they have newer firmware for this battery. The battery manufactured date implies it was made this year. You may want to try a second battery as well.

Lastly, while this is not an Apple made battery, its still using the original cells Apple used so the cycle count and its lifespan should be close to the same Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks
