iPad 4 not charging, replaced charging IC, same result

Hi guys, I got an iPad 4 here. Problem reported by customer: not charging beyond 1%. As routine I tried a new charging port, new battery, same result. So I guess the charging IC chip might be faulty. So I went ahead to replace that charging IC, to my surprise, it made no difference. When plugged to charger, the iPad turned on, usb tester displayed about 2.1 Amps of power getting into the iPad when plugged to charger. But it only last for a few seconds, after the iPad boot into main screen, it stopped charging immediately, USB tester displayed 0 Amp. I even tried another new charging IC, exactly same result.

Upon further testing, I found the input side of the charging IC is OK, PP3V0_S2R_TRISTAR line has 3V detected, PP1V8_S2R_USBMUX has 1.8V detected, but the output side PP3V3_ACC got no voltage detected. I guess that’s why it’s not charging. Can anyone suggest what to do next? I already tried two new charging IC, so I don’t think charging IC is a problem. Any help would be very much appreciated.

PP3V3_ACC  has nothing to do with charging, it is for supplying juice to accessories plugged into the charge port (fans, lights etc).

If a known-good charge port & battery and a replaced Tristar don’t make a difference, then the problem is most likely with the PMIC.

BTW, what version Tristar did you install?

Hi Mingho, at the beginning I installed 1610A3 Tristar (the one compatible with iPhone 5s/6/6s. The battery charged ok. It charged from 1% to 15%, so I know it’s charging, but the iPad won’t boot in to main screen, it stucked with loop boot. Then I realized 1610A3 Tristar won’t work on iPad 4. So I replaced it with a proper 1608A1 Tristar, the iPad booted into main screen without any issue, and it showed the battery had 15% of power (which was charged by 1610A3 tristar earlier). But 1608A1 tristar wouldn’t charge even though the iPad can boot properly.

Hi Mingho, will a faulty PMIC prevent it from charging? But I tested the input side of the Tristar, the voltage are all correct on the input side.

On the IPD4, the charge is delivered by the PMIC. So if you are certain everything else is good (port, battery, Tristar) then the PMIC is the only option left.
