Failed to upgrade now Circle and slash symbol on screen...

i am new to Mac in fact the reason of why i bought this second hand mac-book pro was that my PC with i7 died… i have a little knowledge about Mac laptop especially Os x. Now I know it is similar to Linux based on Unix which i am familiar with but still ‘closed source from open source’ yea yea yea…

I normally run Linux Debian and my intention was to upgrade OS x followed by dual boot along Linux. I didn’t check before starting upgrading and patching it. I knew that MAC has restricted upgrading and supporting mac-book pro mid 2009 machines. Seing this site convinced to give it a try but i failed upgrading it using macOS High Sierra Patcher Tool for Unsupported Macs I followed this how-to http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/ .

Here is what i did and how the problem occurred. So what i know is that this machine came with OS X Leopard and being supported up to OS X El Capitan. I did upgade up to El capitan 10.11.6 via app store. From there i went to try Dosdude’s patcher to upgrade to OS X High Sierra.

After my attempt in the middle of the patching progress and reboot for to complete second process of patching only thing i came up was a Circle and Slash sign

. And the only command that work is Option/Alt showing a Hard disk icon with the OS x recovery version 10.11.6 which is El Capitan. But the weird part is that during installation of OS X all the partitions are wiped included recovery which in the same hard disk.

So i tried single user method but in vain as you can see in picture it says that wrong Os in on the wrong platform meaning wrong machine.

Please any help is appreciated i have no access to any other Mac all i have i small netbook that is running Ubuntu Linux (bionic)

Thanks in advance….

Do you have an original Apple hard drive in it?

On my 2009 Mac Pro I had to flash the EFI, did you do anything like that?

Hi, i dont know all I know is that 256gb Sata which sounds like default configuration of that machine.

This must be your machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (SD) Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2009 15" - MC118LL/A - MacBookPro5,4 - A1286 - 2324*

Hi, thank you Mayer i don't know. After seing your message i logged in App store to check. This is what i found on App Store

Modell: MacBook Pro 15"

Version: OS X 10.11.6

Serienummer: W8939A1W7XJ

yep, your serial # confirms it. I have changed you machine selection to the correct one. I need some time to look over the DosDude method on this machine but it's to late tonight, will look at it again in the morning.

The symbol you are seeing is known as the Prohibitory symbol, basically it is stating that there is a mac operating system installed on the drive but it is not a macOS that your mac can use. All you need to do to get the computer up and running again is reinstall the proper macOS on the drive. You could do this in a number of ways, if you can boot from the recovery media you can reinstall from that screen. Another option is pulling out the hard drive, and reformat it with another computer.
