MacBook Pro powers on when charging cable is plugged in

Hello everyone. As the question title says, my Macbook Pro powers on when the charging cable gets plugged in. Some background:

I was recently cleaning out the inside of my mid-2012 Macbook Pro, which involved disconnecting the battery from the board. This was only a quick dusting, so the board was not removed. After reassembly, I noticed that plugging in the charger now causes the device to power on.

From my research, there are a couple possible explanations that I can think of. The first is that the EFI/firmware has some sort of ‘post power loss’ setting that is causing this behavior. The second is that something in the board related to power is shorted or otherwise damaged. Potentially SMC? I’m not knowledgeable enough about electrical engineering to fully understand this issue.

Do you have any knowledge or expertise that might help me diagnose and/or address this issue? I would like to understand what could potentially be causing this, if it poses any threats to my hardware, and how to address it if possible.
