MacBook Pro 15 2010 won't turn on correctly

Hey there.

I recently bought a used MacBook Pro 15” 2010. When I got it the battery was a little “exploded" so I had to take it out.

It acts kinda strange, when I plug in the MagSafe charger the charger LED won’t turn on for some reason. But, if I hold the power button for 10 seconds and then plug in the charger (while still holding the button) for about 5 seconds, it turns on and boots up to High Sierra.

The keyboard backlight doesn't light up and the fans are spinning as fast as it can go. Then when I turn it off again but still have the MagSafe charger plugged in, it can boot up just fine with one click on the power button.

When I disconnect the charger and plug it in again I would have to do the whole thing all over again… holding the power button etc.

Do any of you guys have any idea what it could be?

The dvd drive does not work either. I have not reset the SMC yet.

There is a problem with the system management controller (SMC) and what you’re doing is bypassing it, that’s why you have fans at full speed. It’s a fairly serious hardware issue as the SMC controls a pretty wide number of sensing circuits and charging. You’ll likely need a component level repair as it’s not advisable to run the machine in those conditions.

Thanks for helping! But does a SMC reset fix the problem or will it need a new SMC/motherboard?

SMC reset is a low level firmware reset that may help with small software glitches, but it can't replace hardware fixing, which seems to be what you need here. You can reset SMC with left shift+ctrl+option+power button with magsafe plugged in, but I took for granted you already tried that. Since you described it just boots in SMC bypass mode there's little to no doubt you have a faulty board there. Sure it can be fixed by someone into component level repairs or replaced.
