Yeah you’ll be able to use any 2.5” SATA drive in your MacBook, including the drives you mentioned, no problem.

Your system has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive interface, as such you need to make sure the drive you put in is able to support this older SATA spec. Only the Samsung SSD offers compatibility Samsung 860 EVO spec sheet You’ll see the interface lists 3.0 Gb/s). Here’s the Crucial MX500 SSD it does not list it.

SATA III drives are backwards compatible with the 3.0 Gb/sec spec.

Sorry guy its the reverse! A fixed speed SATA II drive will play in a SATA III system no problem, a fixed speed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) or SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive will NOT play in a SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) system!

Only an auto sense drive like the Samsung drive will play across the different I/O speeds.

Many of the drive makers are dropping support for the older SATA I/O speeds. As an example Seagate 2.5" SSHD is now a fixed drive so it won't work in the older SATA II systems either.

I was at the meeting this was decided way back when the SATA spec was being created. The idea at the time was the cost of HDD's was so high people would transfer them to a new system, No one dreamt the costs of HDD's would drop so low so fast or even grow to such large sizes. a 100GB drive back then was massive! Today a 2 TB drive is so oh hum! I still have a 2kb core memory board from a DEC PDP system I was using.
