Why have the wifi options disappeared from the settings?

My device is ASUS X507 (256 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, 8GB RAM, Windows 10)

Till yesterday, I had been using Wifi on my laptop. But today I powered it on to find the wifi/available networks button missing from taskbar. I opened network and internet settings but the wifi tab was missing there also. Currently, I cannot access wifi on my laptop. I tried resetting the driver and running troubleshoots, still no luck. I checked the update history and found out that last night there was a driver update “ICEpower - Extension". I think this may be the reason of the problem. However, I found no way to rollback this update or reset my laptop without losing all the apps. Please help!!

No I've done all that before. It's not just an issue of missing icon. The whole functionality is gone. Even the Network option in taskbar icon options is faded.

Hi,

Things to try:

1.) Check the status of the WLAN Network adapter in Device Manager.

To get to Device Manager, in Win10 right click on the Windows start button (left side of Taskbar) and select the Device Manager link.

Scroll down to network adapters, click on the + sign to expand the entry list and find the WLAN adapter.

If there is a red cross next to the entry, right click on the entry and select “enable” and then check if it works.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the entry, right click on the entry and select update drivers and follow the prompts.

You can also check its’ status by right click on the WLAN entry , select Properties and view what is written in the Status Box in the General Tab

Here’s a link to the drivers for your laptop if you can’t get online with the laptop. Scroll to to find the wireless drivers and then download the drivers appropriate to your particular make of card.

If there is no entry for the WLAN listed under Network Adapters, check if there is an entry for “Others” and see if it is there.

Check if it is listed under the “hidden” devices click on the View tab and select “show hidden devices”

2.) If it is not shown at all in Device Manager, start the laptop and go into BIOS and check if there is an entry , usually it is under the Advanced or Security tab which allow you to enable/disable I/O devices and see if the WLAN is disabled there. if it is enable it save the changes, exit from BIOS and restart the laptop and hopefully you should be good to go.

Also try restoring the PC back to before the suspect program update if you can.

Go to Control Panel > Recovery > System Restore and check if there is a restore point before the update. Select it and then follow the prompts.

If no good, try to uninstall the Program that you think caused the problem.

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, find the program click on it and the select Uninstall

Perfect solution

I followed the first one It worked thank you so much

You are the man!! Thanks

Greetings Jay,

What if WLAN isn’t even an option for me to click on in the device manager list? I only have WAN.

Hi @cliffordlandon

There is no separate WLAN category in Device Manager. All network adapters i.e. LAN (Ethernet), WLAN (WiFi) and WWAN (usually SIM card slot in laptop) are listed under the Network Adapter category.

If you are asking about WAN miniports these are software network adapters installed by the OS (Windows) allowing the user to directly connect to other networks via the Ethernet (LAN) port and not hardware adapters which are either mounted or inserted (plug in cards) onto the motherboard.

Most laptops have a LAN adapter IC on the motherboard and a WLAN connector on the motherboard where the WLAN card is plugged into.

To view what network adapters are in your laptop under Device manager → Network Adapters there is either a > or + symbol to the left of the Network Adapter category heading.

Click on that to expand the list of devices for that category.

In there it should show the make and model number of the adapters installed (or at least "found" by Windows). One will be the LAN adapter and the other is the WLAN adapter.

If you search online using the make and model information you can find out which one is which.

To view the status of the adapters "right click" on the adapter and click on Properties then General tab

There is a Device status box in there that tell you the status of the adapter i.e. working OK or some error message if not.

What is the make and model number of the laptop and the installed operating system e.g. Win7, Win8.1, Win10/11 etc?

If it is a new laptop, the problem could be with some settings or software issues. An old laptop could attract software as well as hardware issues. In this article, we address Asus’s laptop WiFi problems with some of the usual solutions that could also be used to fix similar issues on any Windows 10 laptop.

Let us check out the solutions that can be used to ***fix Asus WiFi problem on Windows 10 laptops***. You can try out these solutions in the given order to get back the internet access on your PC. Let us begin.

1 – Run Internet Connections Troubleshooter

You can begin to fix Wi Fi issues on Asus’s laptop by running an in-built troubleshooter that comes with Windows 10. Windows comes with a set of troubleshooting tools that can scan your PC for issues and fixes them. One of the troubleshooters is the Internet Connections Troubleshooter. This tool will look for issues on your PC that could be causing WiFi-related problems.

It is highly suggested to begin fixing wireless network-related troubles with this troubleshooter. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your PC. To do so, you will have to press the Windows key + I key together.

Step 2: In the Settings app, click on the Update & Security option.

Step 3: In the new window, go to the left panel and select the Troubleshoot option. Now, go to the right pane. Here, you will either see a list of troubleshooters or a screen shown in the above screenshot. Make a selection on the Additional troubleshooter’s option.

Step 4: From the list of troubleshooters, look for an Internet Connections troubleshooter. When found, click on it. Now, you will be able to see the Run the troubleshooter button. Click on it.

Now, the troubleshooter will begin looking for internet-related issues on your PC. Now, you can follow the on-screen instructions to fix any issue that is detected.

In case any issue is detected, fix it. After applying the fix, make sure to restart your PC. See if using the troubleshooter fixes the issue.

If any issue is not found by the troubleshooter or doesn’t fix the issue, go ahead and try out the next solution.

2 – Reconnect to WiFi Network

You can try this second solution if you can connect to a WiFi network but cannot access the internet on it. Before proceeding with this method, make sure the internet on other devices connected to the same WiFi network is working fine. If the internet isn’t working on any of the other devices connected to the WiFi network, then the issue must be with its connection. In that case, you might want to connect with your Internet Service Provider.

Step 1: Go to the Windows Taskbar located at the bottom of the screen. Here, go to the extreme left and click on the WiFi logo. A floating window will open with the WiFi network you are connected to. Make a right-click on the WiFi network and select the Forget option.

Now, again click on the WiFi icon on the taskbar. Now, reconnect to the WiFi network you were connected to. Your PC will now require you to enter the WiFi network’s password again. Make sure to have the password handy.

After connecting to the WiFi network again, see if you can access the internet.

3 – Reset Network Configuration

If none of the above two solutions worked, you could try this simple yet effective solution. For this, you will require to launch Command Prompt on your PC and run a few commands. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: To launch the CMD interface, press the Win + R buttons. This will open the Run box. In the run box, type cmd and press the Enter button. This will open the Command Prompt window. In this window, type the following command provided below. After typing each line of commands, press the Enter button to execute the command.

netsh winsock reset

ipconfig /release

netsh int ip reset

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

After executing all the commands, close down Command Prompt window on your PC. When done, restart your PC. After the restart, make sure you are connected to the wifi network and see if the internet is working.

If this did not fix the issue on your Asus laptop, try out the next solution.

4 – Change DNS Server Address

It might be possible that the DNS setting on your PC is incorrect. This may lead to a Wifi connection not working correctly. According to many users, changing the DNS settings on their PC helped fix Asus’s laptop WiFi problems. It would help if you gave it a try, too, by following the steps below:

Step 1: Open Control Panel on your PC. For this, press the Start button. In the Start menu search box, type Control Panel. From the search results, click on the Control Panel option.

Step 2: In the Control Panel search bar, type Network Connections, then from the search result, select the view network connections option.

Step 3: Now, you will see all the network connections on your PC, including the WiFi connection. Make a right-click on the WiFi network you are connected to. From the context menu, select the Properties option.

Step 4: A new window will open. Here, to change adapter settings, make a double click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option.

Step 5: A new window will open again. Here, select the Use the following DNS server address option. In the Preferred DNS server and the Alternate DNS server sections, enter the following addresses, as shown in the above screenshot:

Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4

Step 6: Click on the Ok button after making the changes. Once done, restart your PC. After the restart, see whether you can access the internet on it.

5 – Change Power Management Settings

If you are having issues WiFi problems on Asus’s laptop where the internet connection keeps dropping, you might want to try this solution. Here, you will need to change the power setting on your PC. This includes a few simple steps; here they are:

Step 1: Launch the Device manager window on your PC. For this, press the Win + X buttons together. From the menu that opens, select the Device manager option.

Step 2: In the Device Manager window, click on the Network adapter option. From the list of drivers that will open, make a right-click on the wireless adapter. On the context menu, select the Properties option.

Step 3: In the new window that opens, go to the Power Management tab. Here, uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option. After deselecting this option, click on Ok to save changes.

Once the above changes have been made, go ahead and check whether this resolves the Wi-Fi issue on your laptop.

6 – Update WiFi Driver

If the Wi Fi Driver on your PC is outdated, it may be the root cause of the whole trouble. To ensure that the Wi Fi driver is up to date, you will need to access the Device Manager. Here are the steps you should follow for the same:

Step 1: Open Device Manager on your PC. For this, press the Win + X keys at a time. From the menu, select the Device Manager option.

Step 2: Just like the above solution, expand the Network adapters option. From the list of device drivers, make a right-click on the wireless driver. From the context menu, select the Update driver option.

Step 3: A new window will open. Here, select the Search automatically for drivers option.

Step 4: On the next screen, follow the on-screen instructions to update the driver. This will automatically install the driver update if available.

If the latest driver is already installed, go ahead and try the next solution. If you were able to update the network driver successfully, restart your PC.

After the restart, check if you can access the WiFi internet on your Asus laptop.

7 – Reinstall WiFi Driver

You can also try to reinstall the WiFi driver on your PC. Reinstalling the driver will ensure the replacement of faulty or corrupt wireless network adapter driver. For this, you will need to delete the driver software first. Check out the steps:

Step 1: Open Device Manager, expand the Network adapter section, and make a right-click on the wireless network adapter driver.

Step 2: From the options in the menu, select the Uninstall device option.

When the driver uninstalls successfully, go ahead and restart your PC.

Upon the restart, the network device driver will be installed automatically.

Now check if the WiFi trouble persists.

8 – Check Wireless Adapter Hardware

If none of the above solutions work, and you are unable to connect to WiFi networks, it might be possible that the issue is with the hardware. You can get a separate USB WiFi adapter and see if you can access the internet through it.

Hi @ Hassan Maje,

What is the problem with the WiFi in the laptop, that you need to get an external WiFi adapter?

What is the status of the WLAN adapter as shown in Device Manager?

To get to Device Manager, right click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and select the Device Manager link. When in Device Manager, scroll down to Network Adapters, click on the arrowhead to the left of the entry to expand the list and then and find the WLAN entry.

Is there a red cross or yellow exclamation mark next to the entry?

If there is a red cross, right click on the WLAN entry and select enable device and then check if it works.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark, right click on the WLAN entry and select update drivers. You need to be connected to the internet, via Ethernet for this to work. Here’s a link to the Asus driver support webpage for your model. Scroll down to the Wireless entry.

If you have no ethernet connection use another computer to download the drivers to a USB stick, connect the USB into your laptop and then update the drivers from there.

Check the status of the WLAN adapter, right click on the WLAN entry and select Properties > General tab > look in the Device Status box in the middle to check if it is OK or not.

If there is a problem with the WiFi adapter itself it can be replaced as it is a removable module.

According to this website, there are two internal WLAN adapter cards available for your model.

Click on the sub board checkbox under the Categories subtitle to view the available WLAN / BT module parts and their Asus part numbers.

I’ve shown them below with possible suppliers. Just type the part number only in the search box of your browser to find results for other suppliers of the part that may suit you better.

WLAN part # 0C011-00110Q00 - example shown

or

WLAN part # 0C011-00060L00 - example shown

Hopefully this will help to get the WiFi working internally in the laptop.

UPDATE

Hi @ Hassan Maje,

You may have a faulty WiFi / BT module.

The 1st part number I linked above is for an Atheros WiFi / BT module.

Here’s a link to a video that shows the teardown of an Asus X441BA laptop. Not exactly the same model as yours (closest that I could find) but it is the same series so hopefully it should be of some help in opening the laptop to gain access to the WiFi / BT module

If you decide to replace the module yourself, ensure that you disconnect the battery from the motherboard as soon as access is available to it. You don’t have to remove the battery pack just disconnect it. There is always power available at certain points on a motherboard even when the laptop is switched off. The power switch is not a power isolating switch and you don’t want to cause any electrical problems if you accidentally slip when using tools to do the repair. Mechanical damage is another matter of course ;-)

Be sure to reconnect the battery before finally closing up the laptop after the repair.

Here’s an image taken from the video that shows the location of the WiFi module with its antenna cable connected.

Hello @ Jayeff.

The WiFi option is not there, has disappeared. Before it used to come back after restarts but not any more.

I had installed the drivers from Asus website before, ran setup, modify, repair, remove, install-all different permutations were tried but nothing..

Under Device manager i don't see any WLAN. I see lots of WAN miniport entries and they are all ok. After selecting show hidden under view it shows few names one of which is "Qualcomm Atheros AR... Network Adapter". When I right click on it under properties it says hardware not connected (error code 45). I tried updating driver under driver tab and manually doing but nothing...

I tried restoring PC to different restore point in the past but nothing...

Please help. Thanks

Thanks Jayeff

I could not get the Vendor as they were closed probably due to the holidays but I will sure return the laptop and get it fixed as it is under warranty.

I however got an external USB WIFI adapter and it worked fine.

The weird thing is when the adapter is disconnected to turn off the PC, the WIFI re-appears after starting the PC without needing to plug in the USB WIFI adapter.

Hi @ Hassan Maje,

Have you done a system file check?

Click on Win start button and type cmd in search box. When cmd app appears right click and select run as administrator. When window opens type sfc /scannow Yes there is a space between the c and the /

Try starting the laptop in safe mode with networking - see #6 and check if the WiFi adapter works OK.

There is no Device Manager option when you are in safe mode but hopefully there will be WiFi access if everything is working OK.

I have the same issue with an Asus X570UB, as many had tried, I’ve done plenty of things

The issue appears once the PC suspends itself, I configured the properties of the to never turn off, didn’t work.

I’ve tried:

  • Disabled the automatic turn off of the adapter due to power savings configurations (Can only be done when the adapter is recognized by the OS)
  • Re-install the drivers manually
  • Upgrade to last version of the OS (20H2). I suspect the issue comes from version 1903.
  • Reboot on safe mode with network functionalities
  • Look on the BIOS for any weird configuration, no luck at all

Now I only have left a few options:

  • Downgrade Windows (I noticed the issue appeared on Windows 10 version 1903) I currently have the last one available 20H2 hoping it would be fixed.
  • Upgrade the BIOS.
  • Test another OS (Linux) to discard any hardware compatibility issues.

I’ll keep you posted if I make it work

Hi @MyHusband &_I

The best that you can do is to pause any updates until hopefully they are fixed.

Go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Pause Updates and select a date.

Send feedback to MS so that they can investigate the problem, as usually they say that updates are OK when released but they do investigate if enough complaints are received. Press Windows + F keyboard shortcut or select Feedback Hub from the Start menu,

i had the same problem about a week ago and I have gone through the internet and finally here is how I fixed it. along the way I did find couple more tricks should anyone need them while solving the problem.

Most of the time it's your wireless driver that has been corrupted or outdated however there are a few other issues that could cause trouble. here is the list-

  1. Airplane Mode Malufunctions
  2. Wireless driver Power Management Problem
  3. Wifi Driver for the system is outdated/corrupted
  4. Router/Model Blocking connection

To Fix asus laptop won't connect to wifi you have to check and solve this problem one by one.

  • Uninstall/reinstall wireless adapter
  • Update the Wireless Driver
  • make sure to turn off airplane mode
  • login to the router and check the settings
  • Restore the system to an earlier known good version

If you are wondering about why is my asus laptop not showing wifi network? generally, it happens because of the internet or computer settings. most probably, the wireless settings or Router settings are incorrect. that's why it won't show you the wifi network. to get that fixed, you need to make the following changes.

  1. First of all, you need to turn on the WIFI switch on the asus laptop. probably, the WIFI is off. that's why you are unable to find the new network.
  2. Sometimes, Asus laptop does not connect to the wifi because of the laptop or pc settings. So you need to delete the current wifi driver from your driver. now install the new driver on your computer.
  3. Let's forget the current network. now connect to the new WIFI network.

Once you will make these changes into the asus laptop. your device will start working fine.
