Internal SSD HD not readable.. Then screen stopped coming on.

I came home the other day to see my MacBook Pro had the folder icon with ? on the screen..

I called Apple and they said they thought the SSD HD had failed… but to go into an Apple store to confirm. I went into the Apple store and they confirmed a failed SSD HD and they recommended I purchase a new one and install it myself.

I installed the new SSD HD and the computer still didn't recognize it. I took the back plate back off to check for loose connectors then put it back together. After that while it was loading the recovery tool the screen flickered then went dark/turned off. The computer is still on and the track pad clicks and I get the startup chime. But the screen is defiantly off. There is a red light coming from inside the vents by the screen hinge.. not sure if that light is always on or if it’s indicating there is an issue.

At this point the computer wont recognize the SSD HD and the screen stopped working. I have a feeling the SSD HD did not fail and that there is something else going on here.

This MacBook Pro is in excellent condition and hasn't gotten wet (that I know of) or been dropped.

Any help trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated… Justin

Do you have a bootable external drive or a second Mac which you can use to connect yours to?

Basically, we need to get your system to boot up externally. If you have an external bootable drive you’ll need to use the Startup manager to select it during the boot up. When using a second mac system you’ll set it to be in Target Disk Mode using a Thunderbolt cable between the systems.

And here’s a bit more! Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode

See if you can get this far.

Can I use a thumb drive or USB HD and make a bootable drive? I'd rather do that than buy a firewire cable to hook to my iMac. How will booting from external drive help my internal drive become readable? Just trying to understand the thought process as I don't repair computers very often.

A bootable drive can be any USB or Thunderbolt drive.

In fact I use USB Thumb drives for all of my OS installers! Here's how How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive. You don't need to go this far but this is a handy tool to have.

I didn't want to go to far down the path until we had gotten this far. As its still hard to tell which way the winds are blowing. So lets get your system up via an external drive of some sort USB or Thunderbolt external HDD/SSD/Thumb, or Leverage a second Mac.

Can you get that far?
