Cloning HDD to SSD for upgrade

Hi, I’m planning to upgrade my current 500gb HDD to a 50gb SSD. Could I clone it using disk utility given that the storage capacity is the same? Or should I use a third party app like Superduper or CCC?

Cloning apps are passé!

Surprisingly you already have the needed tool within the OS installer > Migration Assistant <

If you have a SATA to USB adapter or an external drive case to hold your old drive it’s a cake walk!

Boot up under either a USB thumb drive which is setup as an OS installer or run the installer from your old drive from the adapter cable. Format the drive and install the OS. At the end of the installer it will ask you if you want to migrate your stiff from another system or TimeMachine backup. As it turns out you can also do it from an external drive as well!

This is how I do all of my upgrades now. I just did two systems Saturday.

Many clone apps don’t properly setup the drive with the hidden partition in addition all of your old junk is carried over. A clean OS install sheds this buildup of junk and Migration Assistant will carrier over only the stuff you need.

Even if you don’t do the Migration Assistant right after the install, you can do it later! And don’t forget you can also run it from your TimeMachine backup too!

What format do I also use for the SSD? I’m currently running mojave on my HDD and is on APFS and GUID. Should I format the SSD to APFS and GUID also?

Sadly, Apple forces you to GUID / APFS with Mojave which is why I don't recommend jumping to it on the older MacBook Pro's which use SATA drives.

So far Apple has not addressed the queuing issue under SATA drives. APFS also tends to fragment HDD's more heavily. This is not an issue with SSD's as they work on a block method unlike a HDD which is track/sector.

I would stick with Sierra.

Oh alright, that’s why my laptop became slow.

Thanks for helping, Dan! Just have a question/clarification. How do I do the clean install? Do I do the clean install while the SSD is plugged to the SATA to USB cable? At what part do I physically swap the drives?

Thank you :)

The queueing issue is not likely your issue! The queuing issue only becomes a problem when you are running multiple programs and/or open docs asa the same time.

More likely your slowness is an old or bad SATA cable. Here's the needed part MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here's the guide to follow MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable Replacement. In addition you want to place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses to help protect it from the rough surface of the uppercase. In addition you don't want to crease the cable where it folds! You want smooth arcs. Sharp bends damages the cable!

The steps to do what you need to do is:

1 - Take out HDD

2 - Replace HD cable

3 - Plug in virgin SSD into the HD cable and secure it

4 - Plug in SATA to USB cable and plug in HD into it

5 - Boot up system use Option key to select HDD

5 - Run OS installer from HDD or UBS OS installer.

6 - Format SSD using Disk Utility

7 - Install OS on to new drive

8 - Run Migration Assistant to copy over user accounts, apps & data

9 - Restart system with HDD removed

Done!

Just updated my RAM from 4GB to 16GB and so far there's a huge difference. Computer doesn't lag anymore and I can open my files with ease already not like before where I had to wait several minutes. Kinda back to normal performance already.

I'm already downloading the OS to start with the replacement of the HD. Should I run the OS first on step 5 before formatting the SSD on Disk Utility on step 6?

Is there a difference when you install the OS externally first on the SSD before switching the drives physically?

Great help from you, btw! :)

If you already have a backup external drive there’s no need of disk utility or third party cloning utilities, all you need is time machine in system preferences for your backup and migration assistant in the utilities folder to restore your data on your new drive after Ssd install.
