MBP top case replacement suggestion.

Hi there,

a friend of mine mailed me today if I could help him source a new display to replace the broken one in his 13” mid 2009 MacBook Pro A1278.

Out here in Europe, spare Mac parts are exceedingly difficult to source, even on the iFixit.eu store.

Doing comparative research between 2 iFixit repair guides, I found out that most probably, an entire topcase of an A1278 MacBook 13” 2008 will also fit a bunch of younger MacBook Pro models.

This repair is wayyy easier than having to open the top case & replace only the LCD unit!

As I happen to have a broken 2008 A1278 13” MacBook, I will most probably succeed in repairing his 2009 13” MBP with my own spare parts.

Just thought I might just as well share this tip with you all.

Good luck!

I would be curious if the same board connection is shared across the 2008 to 2009 displays and if the layout of the connections are identical. Keep us posted on how this works, it would be good to have another ace up our sleeves.

As I've stated before, I've compared both the MacBook Unibody 13" 2008 and MacBook Pro Unibody 13" 2009 display replacement guides, and the cable layout, cable routing and connectors indeed seem to be identical.

On top of that, both displays have the same dimensions and resolution.

Both Macs share the same GPU.

So I definitely will try the swap & keep you all posted!

Sadly the 2008 models use a very different frame and the display signaling is different than the 2009 and newer MacBook or MacBook Pro's.

OK, lets clarify what works and what doesn’t and why.

To start with your system is part of this set of system’s A1278 - MacBook & MacBook Pro 2009 thru 2012

Even still Apple has altered the logic board as well as the FaceTime (iSight) camera a few times.

The MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2010) Display Assembly offers the standard FaceTime camera.

The FaceTime HD camera was introduced in the 2011 models MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Early 2011-Late 2011) Display Assembly

The Mid 2012 the camera was upgraded again to 720p FaceTime HD camera MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Display Assembly

Which is why each of these parts are unique to the different years. The issue is the camera cable connection is different!

Instead of dealing with the different parts I would recommend you focus on the LCD panel alone! MacBook Pro 13" Unibody LCD Panel It fits all of the 13” A1278 models and a lot cheaper!

Considering the OP mentioned in his "question" a 2008 Macbook, not being available any 13" Pro in 2008, I assume he speaks here about the Unibody, which doesn't share anything at all with the 13" Pro of 2009/2010. More than a tip that would be an hoax ;)

@arbaman - Very true! Which was what my comment in the question was addressing ;-}

You can't use the 2008 MacBook display assembly with any of the Unibody systems.

Sorry, my last comment was reported as spam.

But please do compare these 2 iFixit guides closely:

MacBook 13"Unibody A1278 2008:

MacBook Unibody Model A1278 LCD Panel Replacement

MacBook Pro 13" A1278 2009:

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2009 LCD Replacement

Both the camera cables & LVDS cables seem exact lookalikes.

What do you think?

@ Bart , the statement "seem exact lookalikes" is correct, same shape and number of pins, but that's it, as components used for circuitry are different both for logic boards and screen assemblies, they just wouldn't recognize each other. The two screens don't even have lid magnets placed in the same positions and wouldn't match. Sorry to disappoint you, but it simply won't work.

Yes, the LCD panels are the same!

The Camera/Airport cable is not the same and the camera its self is not the same.
