Google pixel rear glass camera won't focus

I had a minor crack in the glass and I wanted to replace it

Block Image

So I took it to the shop to have the back glass replaced. After he replaced it the camera would not focus properly. So when taking pictures the text in images would come out blurry (for example).

But when I told the repairer it’s still blurry he removed the glass and said maybe there is an issue with the glass. The camera will not focus without the glass so the glass maybe faulty. Is this true? Is the glass needed for the camera to focus?

Google will not help. I bought pixel 3 XL the day it came out. I love Google and have always bought and promoted their phones. I also bought the Google phone case. A few weeks ago, the phone would not turn on so I brought it to Verizon and they took it out of case to reveal the back glass was cracked and therefore out of warranty. Verizon was able to get it turned back on though. The camera worked fine until yesterday when I went to take a picture of my son and saw it would not focus. I contacted Google and went through all their trouble shooting steps. They admitted it is the camera hardware but they refused to fix or replace it until I paid to have the glass back fixed even though it has nothing to do with the fact the camera won't focus. They lost a loyal customer today. I have never liked Apple but it is obvious to me now why Apple is way ahead of Google in regards to hardware.

I don’t think that is the case, the Auto focus should still be able to do its job. The auto focus Mechanism on my cellphone went after a bad drop. you will likely need to replace the actual camera. Guide and part are linked Google Pixel Motherboard Replacement

Actually the phone was dropped 11 months ago. And the camera was focusing perfectly - I took a picture one hour before the repair. But after it refuses to focus. The guy said wait until I get another rear glass. But I'm worried he damaged my camera ;(

It certainly can happen, Do you hear an audible grinding sound? or any sounds of the camera trying to focus?

Sorry @Dan for the late response I didn't get a notification about your comment.

Grinding sound no but sound of the camera trying to focus, yes.

But i'm confused is the rear glass needed for the camera to focus or not? I can't understand if it's due to the glass that the phone won't focus or that the repairer has damaged my camera during the fix.

Sounds like the camera itself is broken then. Youll want to replace the missing glass too to protect the camera

@welchd Apologies I retested and there is no sound whatsover.

We ran into a similar problem with a customer that brought in a Samsung phone to have us replace the rear camera glass. Their camera would not focus either. Even after replacing the broken back camera glass, this still didn’t fix the problem. Not sure on the Pixel but in my experience, the cover over the camera is only a piece of glass. As far as I know is has nothing to do with the camera focusing. It’s possible that the tech damaged your camera and is just telling you it’s a bad piece of glass because they either don’t know what they’re talking about or they are hoping you just leave it.

I have a Pixel 4 and after 7 months one day the camera can’t focus, did all the restart and reset all to no avail. Vodafone said they could send it back but then signing into my accounts without a phone can’t happen. Vodafone said they have no loan phones ask Google. Google said they send a replacement subject to warranty claim but pre authorise my account for the cost of the replacement phone. Here’s the part that annoys me they pre-authorized $1199.00 just $1.00 off twice the amount Vodafone charged for the phone. I am send the faulty phone tomorrow and should Google declares not warranted. I’ll be returning the replacement phone as not fit for purpose under Australian Customer Law. Once I get the old phone back, I’ll be returning it to Vodafone same reason unfit for purpose. The phone is perfect never dropped, no cracks or scratches to the phone. I’ll like it but not that much.

Fairly recent phone? Uh they use liquid focus tech or piezo. A field of electricity changes a tiny amount of liquid/solid to achieve focus. How is the glass removed? Usually a heat gun, which is fine anywhere EXCEPT the camera. The process either warped the mechanical lens assembly or evaporated the liquid. Either way an overheated camera=seized focus. Thankfully they’re tiny little click in modules, and fairly cheap. I’m amazed a repair shop didn’t know basics of camera operation.
