Why won't mac recognize my new SSD drive?

I bought a OWC Aura Pro X SSD / 480 GB [연계 제품이 누락 또는 비활성화 됨: IF123-123] to upgrade my early 2014 13” MacBook Air.

When I boot up by holding command-R when I press start and a bit thereafter till message appears. I then go into Disk Utility but it doesn’t see the drive (and of course if I go to ‘restore from time machine’ it doesn’t find the disc to restore to either). I’m running OS X 10.13.4. I’m quite sure it’s seated properly because it’s seated identically to the old one, and each time I put back the old one it works fine (also it’s in far enough to put back the screw holding it down).

I first tried to install it running OS X 10.10.x, when it wasn’t recognized I realized I needed 10.13 so I upgraded, and now trying to install it again, but it’s still not found. Also it has a blue putty-looking square above a metal pad that I guess is to radiate heat, I left the putty square there, don’t know if I was supposed to but I don’t imagine that could cause any problem?

The card has a different layout than the one in the picture at the link above. Perhaps that’s because it’s 480 GB, perhaps the picture is for 240 GB?

Does anyone have any idea what to do next?

Thanks.

Basically we are facing the shoe cobblers dilemma!

You walk into a shoe shop with a broken heel and ask the cobbler to fix your shoe. He can’t fix it with you wearing them can he? Thats the problem we face here.

In this case the Aura drive needs a firmware update but as its still active so it can’t be updated. If we have an external drive (USB Thumb drive here) then the Aura drive can have its firmware updated (as well as your system).

Here's the steps you'll need to take: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive or How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive

Depending on your MacOS version you are running you may need to get a firmware update file from OWC to put on your USB drive.

FYI: The Blue putty is intended to pull the heat away. When you compress it with the bottom cover the heat will transfer to the bottom cover acting as the heat sink.

Thank you for all your help! But I'm still confused. When I boot up with command-R held down, disk utility can't see the disk. So if I boot up from a USB drive, why will that make disk utility see the disk? If it can't see the disk, it can't update the firmware.

By the way, the mac is currently running 10.13.4, so its firmware should have been updated.

Thanks so much!

The problem is you need to have the firmware held on the booting drive. Using Internet Recovery only has what Apple sells, it doesn't offer the needed firmware. Which is why you first need to create the USB thumb drive and they you need to add to it the needed firmware update from OWC.

Great, thanks!

How so? The OS has no bearing on here on what the app is 32bit or 64bit.
