Why can't my laptop find the new camera in the cover I replaced?

I removed the old display cover and replaced it with a new one.

When I started the laptop back up and tested it, however, the computer couldn’t find the camera that is part of the cover. I followed the advice for troubleshooting the camera, including ‘Scan for hardware changes,’ but it the camera still doesn’t show up in Device Manager.

I hasten to say yes, I DID plug the new camera into the connector on the computer!

Interestingly enough, when I plug the old camera into the connector, the computer finds the camera and it works just fine.

Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a fix for it?

I feel pretty dumb, because there was a simple reason why the computer couldn't find a camera: BECAUSE THERE WASN'T A CAMERA TO FIND!

Just because the new back cover to the screen had the camera cable on it, I assumed without looking the there was also a camera attached. There wasn't!

I took the camera out of the damaged/replaced cover and installed it in the new cover and, voila, it worked just fine.

I'm going with the excuse that this was the first time that I'd ever been inside a laptop computer, but still, what a dope!

Thanks to those who responded. I thought that I owed you this update.

Where did you buy it from this can happen when you buy a bad quality part. So please let me know if you bought it from IFIXIT. If your old camera is working then why don’t you use it?

Thanks for the rapid response, Scott!

I did not buy the part from IFIXIT. Do you folks sell this item?

The seller (http://myworld.ebay.com/felo3000) has excellent ratings, so hopefully they will make it right if need be.

The idea of using the existing, working camera occurred to me, too, but it is held in place with double sided tape and I would need to be careful to not damage it during removal. Do you have any tips for removing it?

I posted this question on your forum and also asked the seller the same question, wanting to be sure that there wasn't some software issue that I was missing. So far, that does not appear to be the case.

May I assume that if you knew of such an issue that you would have pointed it out to me?

Thanks again for taking the time to respond and in advance for your answers to the three questions above.

The best tip for removing tape is heating it up a little. Even though it's a good seller everyone makes mistakes so I am still guessing that that camera had an issue. It's a very good choice who you chose on eBay. Good luck on your repair.

No it doesn't look like IFIXIT has your model laptop.

Thanks again for your attention to my issue, Scott. I'll let you know how it goes.
