White screen with question mark after installing SSD

I have changed HDD to SDD (Samsung EVO ) on my old iMac 2009 (earlier version, with not pluggable sensor for HDD) and cannot install OS from bootable USB because after clicking on the selected bootable device I see a white screen with a picture of the directory and a question mark in the middle. I was able to install Ubuntu from bootable USB without any problems. So, SSD works fine. And I was able to install Mac OS connecting SSD to macbook and then I have tried to put that SSD to iMac but it does not boot. Command + R or other combinations do nothing, only able to choose bootable device pressing Option button works. Any suggestions or ideas what could be wrong?

Make sure you first format the drive GUID and Mac OS X extended, then install your Mac System.

This makes perfect sense! Windows & Linux use a very different format & OS file structures which is not compatible for Mac file system.

You’ll first need to boot up under a bootable MacOS drive. In your case this model requires a FireWire drive or a Bootable Mac OS installer CD. When you got your Mac you should have received a set of Grey CD’s one of these is a bootable disk. If you have access to another Mac you could create a bootable FireWire HD/SSD drive using the OS it has. The one thing you do need to be aware of is the highest version of OS-X your system supports is Snow Leopard (10.6.x). So you do need to make sure you don’t try anything newer.

There is one more way that you can setup your Mac using Target Disk Mode here we are interconnecting two Mac’s back to back with a FireWire cable treating your Mac as if it where an external drive:
