I dropped my phone in water recently but took it to a repair shop. The guy was able to repair most of the phone but said he was unable to repair the SIM port. He tested his own SIM but it will not show a service signal or data. He told me it’s basically an iPod now. Is there anyway to repair this part? He said because of the water damage it wasn’t fixable.

Under the Sim card reader there are quite a few test points for different power and data lines related to radio services that may easily oxidise if water remains trapped under it. Besides that, half the phone is dedicated to radio components and the chance water reaches and shorts related power and data lines is pretty high. Phone might be recovered, but requires quite a bit of work and some luck, and if it’s just a 16GB version might not be economically interesting to invest in a component level repair.

sounds like the sim card port is dead not sure if removing it and changing would help since it is water damaged

this maybe fixable by cleaning the sim reader internally with Alchol, certainly don't write the phone off yet without getting it looked at, we repair these all the time with nothing more than a clean.
open the phone up and where the sim sits you will see six contacts remove the sim tray first then try lifting these up SLIGHTLY with some bent tweezers(if you lift them up too far they will get caught on the sim holder, also there is a micro switch (just behind the sim contacts) that will open when sim tray is inserted, if this is corroded then it wont work so clean all this area with alchol.
